We stopped here for lunch before strolling down the shops of Bellows Falls. This was a hard one to rate. When we walked in, we immediately went up to the front register to order lunch food after looking at the lunch menu. Apparently this was the wrong thing to do, as informed by the rather grumpy cashier. Somehow, without guidance, we were supposed to have known to just sit down and wait for a waiter, while others were in line at the counter. The cashier took our order. So that was our introduction to this cafe.
Second, after rather sheepishly sitting down, we noticed a random kitty strolling about and begging to be let out. I love cats, but I'm not sure if a cat really belongs in a food establishment especially since said kitty can come in and out from the outside freely.
Third, the food we ordered was also a mixed bag. The sandwich was delicious, and this is not an exaggeration. The coleslaw side, however, was a let down compared to the sandwich. The coffee was also good and potent.
It really is a shame, as I don't like to leave critical reviews. But I also like to provide critical feedback so that places can improve.
(1) If you don't have a sign, a guide, or a greeter to explain to newcomers how things are supposed to run, do not get upset and snippy at the customer who is paying your bills.
(2) The atmosphere and entire setting of the cafe is dated. It wants to be a cozy place, it really does, but with old paint, dirty outlets and trim, and random kitty cats strolling about, it's a hard sell.
(3) The payment system is entirely based on the honor system. You order your food, then you get your drinks and desserts on your own. Then it's your job to tell the cashier what you ended up getting. If you were in a big city, you'd have hemorrhaged money by now.
Management and the service needs help as even with the most delicious food, it can't overcome these...
Read moreI am not sure how I feel for this place. The owner kindly takes your order at the table purposely having limited staff but forces customers up to get up to take drink order to read tiny drink menu board lettering with no prices posted. No prices for coffee or smoothies or for all their pastries. She will charge for refills too as she keeps track as you kindly help yourself. You will surely get ripped off on unknown prices if you are not careful. But the food menu has prices but rest assure when you are force to get up to pay at the register as she rings you up with this back and forth chaos. If you are not quick, the food prices are inaccurate and are much higher than menu prices given as she makes excuses for overcharging as she rings you up on purpose. You will unknowingly get fooled on prices after eating a delicious meal after she makes you comfortable being there. Then says you don't write or enter tip when using credit card but you are required awkwardly tell her how much tip to add to the card and stares at you. We been here a few times and I picked up on her game. If she doesn't correct her shady practices, I...
Read moreQuality food! Quality ingredients and real craft turning those ingredients into delicious and healthy meals and into a large assortment of baked goods for your morning, afternoon or evening sweet tooth. This is the kind of eatery that makes me want to relocate to Bellows Falls. All day breakfast — the most magnificent French toast you’ve ever seen (real maple syrup of course), an array of breakfast burritos with plenty of options for the vegitarian and the meat lover. I would have loved to stay long enough to take pics of the menu, baked goods, open view kitchen and cozy interior but I needed to scoot to the veterinarian (Westminster Animal Hospital) a few miles down the road. My burrito photo doesn’t do justice but does show the care they put into presentation. Walking in the door and inhaling the good cooking aroma starts to quell the appetite before you even order. Great place to hole up for the afternoon with a good book and a cup of their small batch roasted coffee. The only downsides were no WiFi (but there was a strong cell signal) and inability to tip on a debt...
