I came here with my family after driving an hour from Atlanta for an appointment at one of the offices next door. We were really hungry, the kids were so excited about eating some yummy BBQ. We saw the reviews, and they were excellent, so we went in and ordered around 60.00 worth of food. My family is blended, with my fiance being white and British, my son is also white and my daughter is black and I'm mixed race. After I ordered, he mentioned that there was what looked like an old Georgia flag framed on the wall. (This was a day after literally being called the N word while cycling in to work in Atlanta WITH my daughter.) My partner and I are both teachers, and he particularly knows the history of how Georgia adopted the stars and bars flag of the confederacy in 1956 in an effort to protect segregation and in protest against the Civil Rights Movement. The flag itself was donated by Rep. Tom Campbell (Who then went on to be a racist judge) in 2001 when the racist flag was changed to it's current iteration which is not triggering and openly racist.
Now, this was really difficult for me- The food was just coming out. I was really upset that they had the flag up, the kids were hungry and I could have just eaten the food and pretended the incredibly hurtful flag that was incorporated when my ancestors were slaves and the South openly fought to KEEP my ancestors as slaves for profit and greedy gain. I could have pretended the symbol that represented that flag didn't exist on the wall in a place that I had just given my money to. But, I couldn't set that example for my kids. So, I sighed, explained to them what the flag was, and that we couldn't eat here and told the woman (Who was very nice) that we couldn't patronize a business with that confederate flag up. As we began walking out the door, an older guy (I imagine the owner) asked "Whats wrong with them?" and the lady said "They're offended by the flag" and he yelled out, "those are Georgia's flags. Don't you see them hanging up?" To which I say, "those are the stars and Bars, that's not Georgia's current flag." And he started arguing with me loudly! So, my fiance came up and gave him a short history lesson, and and he yelled at us to "get out of here, then"
I didn't expect to get our money back. But ANY business still proudly displaying a symbol of hate and slavery will never get any of my business. And, it's hurtful and traumatic to sit in an establishment who proudly states "IF it were up to me, you'd still be my property" Shame, shame on you Slope's. If you cared about your black customers, you'd take that disgusting flag down immediately. In the meantime, I'm going to tell everyone I know to not visit that establishment until you recognize that how painful it is to see a flag that represented a history of slavery in the South. If I could give zero stars, I would. Also, if you're an ally- and you see that flag, you should walk out too. Only one lady mentioned the flag after I read several reviews!...
Read moreI normally try a place more than once before leaving a bad review but I hope the owners fix this soon. Before visiting I read a review saying that the meat was dry and tasteless. I have pretty high expectations for bbq. Any time we are going on a road trip we stop at a hole in the wall bbq place. I’ve had some pretty amazing food stopping at these places. With that being said, this has to be the driest most tasteless pulled pork I’ve ever put in my mouth. It tasted like the pork roasts you get that’s precooked in an oven from a grocery store deli. It had that nasty grease taste to it. The “fried” okra was your typical so called southern fried okra that’s really not southern fried okra. You could tell it was pre breaded frozen okra. It was good but nothing to congratulate. The baked beans were very sweet and thick. The apple cobbler was good. Maybe one day when I am in the area I will stop in and try something else off of the menu. Maybe their expertise is the ribs or brisket and I just missed out on something amazing by ordering the pulled pork. There is no smoke flavor in the food I ordered. You can always tell your food is going to be good when even the sweet tea has a smoked flavor. The sweet tea also needs some loving by the way. Come to think of it, I didn’t smell bbq when I got out of my car. That’s usually a sign. If you don’t smell smoke when you first pull up, pull out and google another bbq joint. Bubba Q is 20 minutes down the road. I’ve never ate at the Woodstock location but the Jasper location always has good food. I wish this business many more years of success but I hope they start putting a little more love into their meat. It was not made with love. Whoever is cooking it really needs to pay attention to what they are doing and put a little more spirit into...
Read moreSmaller potions, bigger prices & cold food. My family and I have eaten at Slopes a lot over the years and the food was always pretty good. We were shocked at the huge increase in price from just a few months ago. I understand inflation but but $6 or $7 more for the same plate of food was a lot but we were still willing to try. New ownership.
When they brought out plates they gave my daughter Texas toast and told her I got the last corn bread, sorry. How do you run out of corn bread and not know? It was cold. My husband’s okra was cold and my sides were cold. No excuse for cold fried okra and cold sweet potato fries and room temperature Mac n cheese. They were only moderately busy and seemed to have plenty of staff. When the manager brought my plate back, he said “Is this yours?” And I said yes. He hands it to me and doesn’t even apologize. An apology would have given this review an extra star. The girl who brought us our food and my husband’s fresh okra was nice and smiled at least.
I was never thrilled about the decor and I honestly don’t feel the stars and bars should be displayed. It does not matter if it is an old Georgia flag or not, it is offensive and why our state flag was changed more than 20 years ago. Politics have no place in a...
