Well, I'm really torn. I absolutely love shave ice. I've had Ululanis many times during our visits to Maui-it was one of those āsimply the bestā during our daily visits for shave ice. I was so excited when I heard that was finally coming to the mainland and to Round Rock Texas for heaven sakes.
For my second visit here-I was really hopeful that my first visit was just a fluke. The service and the ambience was delightful in their new location but the shave ice did not come close in flavor. My recent visit Confirmed for me that there is simply no comparison. When I arrived, there was a very large group of young people probably at least 20 that were sitting at all the tables along one side of the property. They were just finishing up their shave ice š§ and left as I was perusing the flavors. The employees behind the counter, were just as attentive and pleasant. I told them about my experiences at the original location. They advised that the owners had done extensive training with all the employees as they opened this new location. They are not sure if they use the same brand flavoring as they do on the islands. In thinking about it -thatās the only thing That I know of that could affect the flavor. They definitely give you a nice size serving of ice and plenty of flavoring and I also had a snow cap on mine this time which I thought was sweetened condensed milk, (but Iām honestly not sure.) Shave ice is my all time favorite cold treat and itās upsetting to have to give them three āļø āļø āļø stars. I canāt put my finger on it but knowing the quality product Iāve had many a time in Hawaii I am not going to give up. I will return and give it...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe've been Ululani's fans for more than a decade. We've visited the shop in Round Rock twice in the first week they've been open. It absolutely lives up to the authentic Maui experience. Fantastic employees spreading Aloha and serving up happiness in the form of the smoothest shave ice with the best flavors you'll find anywhere.
I've enjoyed every flavor I've tried (except one- and that's just a flavor I never like). You can certainly get common flavors like cherry and be perfectly happy, but you'll really get into the Ulu's experience when you order more unique flavors, which are made with pure cane sugar and real fruit flavors. Calamasi is a citrus lime flavor that I really like. Red Hot and Mango Habanero bring some nice heat if you like that.
As a newbie, order the keiki size without ice cream and choose one of their named combinations or up to 3 flavors. I suggest one tried and true favorite, one that's a stretch for you. You can add various toppings but you might want to try it...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI canāt think of a place that compares in the snow cone/shave ice realm since Iāve been to Ululaniās!
They have a ton of flavors, so whether you like creamy flavors/sour/or fruity, thereās something for everyone. The hardest part is choosing.
I got the shave ice with coconut ice cream on the bottom and Iāve thought about it every day since! If I want to save my calories in the future Iāll skip the ice cream on the bottom but I really loved it.
I thought their service was friendly. I noticed another customer asking for extra syrup twice while making their way through their shave ice and the staff happily obliged without any seemingly hard feelings. I liked that and thought it reflected well on their approach to customer happiness. Regarding my shave ice, I was more than satisfied with the syrup pour.
I selfishly wish they had one more location in pflugerville, north Austin, or even central Austin. Itās a 20 minute drive for me but Iāll happily make my way over...
