Went around 4:30 on a Thursday evening, place was empty. Young guy behind the counter seemed very “tired” and out of it. Was slow and seemed confused.
Ordered 3 dogs, a cheese fry and 2 sodas for the two of us. They carry Coke products but also Sea Breeze Red Birch beer, which I enjoyed.
Dogs were up in less than 4 minutes, fries took about 6-7 minutes. The woman behind the counter pushed over two orders of fries, I told her we only ordered one, and sure enough the receipt said two. I told her politely I only ordered one and she gave me a blank stare and walked around the corner. Didn’t want to cause a scene, so just tossed them out.
All of the dogs I had were dirty water dogs. They were firm with a great snap. The bun to dog ratio was nice. The bun was warm, but again, just a vessel for the glizzy.
Sauerkraut dog- Sauerkraut was cold and probably from a bag, was nothing special. Cheese and Chili dog- Chili was nice, not too overpowering Cheese Fries- thin, crispy (McDonaldsish) and very tasty. Very large portion. The cheese was your classic melted cheese sauce but did the trick. Cheese to fry ratio was on point.
All in all, the place has a retro cabin vibe and the dogs and fries are well above average. Even though the service experience I had was not the best and got charged for something I did not order or eat, I’d give this place another...
Read moreSo pulling into this place I was kind of hit with a "what are we thinking with this one" feeling. It's an older looking A frame type all wooden building that looks like it would be set at the bottom of a Swiss Alp serving hot chocolate and crudités plates. Turns out Davy's has some serious dogs, and according to my kids, some pretty tasty burgers as well.
We came here after the last day of school last year as a bit of a celebration for my kids, and a way for us to try out a new place. Since having gone, I've also heard their chicken cheesesteak and milkshakes are excellent so I'll need to go back at some point. We ordered some plain dogs, burgers, A chili dog with onion and mustard, and an Italian dog.
The plain dogs were solid. My kids enjoyed the flavor and the cost was right in line with anywhere else in the general area. The burgers were also solid. They're served on Jersey Kaiser rolls (which I love) and the meat was juicy and flavorful. The Chili dog was very tasty. A solid chili with good consistency and flavor. Went really well on this dog. The Italian dog was also excellent. Two large dogs with fried potatoes, onions, and peppers on a huge roll. Wasn't even remotely close to finishing it...worth the cost.
We'll be back here for sure at some point. A worthy stop with a quick on/off from Route 80. Davy's Dogs -...
Read moreHaving grown up in Morris County I had driven past Davy’s on many occasions, but never stopped in. I always wondered what was up with that mysterious cabin of a hot dog stand. Well I was in the area recently and finally took the opportunity to pop in. I’m glad I did because it was a treatful experience. We tried both a Taylor ham, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich and a dog with relish and mustard ( they made us a second dog we didn’t order but gave it to us for free, which was sweet) and also had an order of fries. The breakfast sandwich was good, and the hot dog was very good. If I go back I would definitely get the dog grilled (boiled is the default, but I noticed afterword that you can ask for grilled), just because that’s my personal preference. I would also like to try the specialty dogs with different toppings. The fries were top notch, crispy, greasy and salty. Best part was Davy came out to ask us how our food was and told us that his dad (a WWII d-day hero) said that if he survived the war he would build a Swiss chalet style house for his family, which he did just up the road. Davy as a youngster started his hot dog cart and later built the restaurant with the help of his dad. Really great experience and reasonably...
