Zhen’s Chinese Restaurant — Restaurant in Saint Helens

The food was excellent and prices are pretty much on par for the quality of food. Atmosphere is rather dated and In need of a refresh. Service is in need of some improvement. We stood around for about 10 minutes waiting to be seated, despite tables being open and available so we finally just sat ourselves and grabbed menus from the server counter. When we were finally acknowledged and a server came to our table, we requested tea. Appetizers and meat were both delivered and still no tea. Asked again and it was brought to the table. Our table had no condiments or anything, so I asked for some soy sauce. The server said there's only enough for 1 per table...? Were we not at a table? Ended up grabbing one from the table across from us as no one was occupying it. The cashier was rather curt to a customer on the phone (we were sitting right next to the register) and was acting put off when we came up to pay. When they ran my card the reader crashed and I was asked " Can't you just pay with cash?"... Luckily I did have enough cash to cover the bill but when I asked for a receipt I was informed that they don't provide receipts for cash sales so I guess dinner was on me since I can't provide a receipt for accounting. The food description, preparation and ingredients are as if someone told the cook about American Chinese food and they made it from the description. The server was polite and pleasant but didn't know what was in the food ingredient wise. There were some tacky zen garden style posters but the tables were so tight to the seats we were physically uncomfortable the whole time. I got the appetizer sampler which had 1 of the 4 things the menu said it had and shrimp lo mein I couldn't get through the sampler plate, and a bite of the lo mein was all I needed to know it was wrong. My girlfriend got halfway home n got sick on the sidewalk and again next to the front door. We believed the reviews saying they made good food. I'm thinking those people have never had good Chinese food to be able to properly...

The food is always good. It seemed very disorganized, everyone was working everywhere and because of that the service was lacking. We had a new girl who was on her 2nd day and it was quite busy. She got a little frazzled, but it was just too chaotic, and she was trying her best. When I handed her HER tip, I watched her take it up to the counter, and they told her where to put it. I asked her why and apparently, they share their tips. I absolutely despise that. When you start paying my bills, then you can tell me how to spend MY money, but until then, YOU don't get to tell me who gets my tip. I decide that and I likely won't be back...
