I have to admit that this is my secret guilty pleasure. To be honest,I'm astonished to see anything below 5 stars here for any reason other than not knowing and getting here at the rush and hoping to have a seat. While, yes,it is small, this is one of Salem's biggest secrets. I found it by chance several years ago,and I always look forward to coming back. I've eaten there several times, and I must confess that I can't fully review all their menu due to the fact that I simply can't get over the 1st one I tried.Have to gat it every time. It's called the Burbank.Just a hot ham sammich. But not some deli slice processed wanna be ham. This is the little bits left over from your grandmother's Christmas ham that you drop in a pan the next day and fry til it's a little crispy. That's just the start of the Burbank. That combined with the obviously fresh toppings and cheeses all baked into a hot bun.So good. While I may not be able to attest to the other menu options,I did have the opportunity to introduce a well traveled business partner to this place the other day.He has the pastrami on rye.I was shocked at the fact that he managed to put it all down at age 75. It was large enough for most any appetite. After his 1st bite he mentioned that it was really lean, and that he liked that. He was quiet as a church mouse for the rest of his meal. Like I said, this is Salem's best kept secret,so get there before the rush or call ahead. If you dont, you may be forced to make new friends while waiting. No worries here though, everyone seems happy enough to wait. You will fall in love with the food here, not to mention the people. The 2 working together there put their heart and soul into this and it shows. I cannot recommend Cafe Express enough.I will be eating there again, and again,and...
Read moreIf I didn’t live 6 hours from here, I would be here every day. My husband is amazing at finding hidden gems like this one and we stopped here on our trek from Texas to NJ. Walking in, we received one of the warmest greetings we have ever been welcomed with. It was pretty early in the day and I was asked if I minded waiting a few extra minutes because the turkey wasn’t done yet…. Yes! They roast all of their own meats on site and hand carve it for each sandwich. Of course I didn’t mind waiting, but luckily, it ended up being ready anyway. When I tell you that this was one of the best sandwiches I ever had in my life…. Now onto price. Mine was like $9 and my husband’s was $10 or $11. Incredible prices for the size and quality of that you receive. I was honestly shocked that they were as inexpensive as they were. So if you’re in or around Salem, VA, definitely stop here. I really wish we lived closer because this would be one of our daily go-to spots if we did! Outrageously friendly service, very reasonable prices, and the food is out...
Read moreWoah..... i would have never thought to go here, but someone recommended it to me. So i went; and boy was i impressed. The nice lady greeted me and was very polite. i ordered a simple curry chicken. I talked to some of the regulars there about the food while i waited. They say they love it and that they are stuck on the burgers. my food arrived after about 7 minutes. And it was a well portioned plate of curry chicken, rice pilaf and potatoes with green beans. The potatoes and green beans were cooked perfectly and had great texture. The chicken curry tasted great! The chicken was tender and delicious. The rice, as boring as it can, was actually very tasty. It was moist and buttery and not boring or bland at all. This was my first time going and i will be back again for...
