The manager there was amazing but his staff was less incapable of serving food to the public. While we were seated fairly quickly that is unfortunately the only good thing this review will be about. The chips and salsa were stale and the salsa tasted like marinara with cilantro mixed in. For a Mexican place the waitress we had was extremely rude and had a massive language barrier issue. While we pointed at what we wanted on the menu ( we do this because itâs easier to show what we want to ensure proper accuracy) the woman laughed at us when my grandmother wanted chicken nuggets ( she wasnât hungry and only wanted something light that wasnât going to be spicy) it took our first waitress and another waiter and THEN the manager to finally get them to understand what we wanted to eat. My burrito was disgusting and a shame to Mexican cuisine. It wasnât even seasoned. Iâm not a person who wants to have my mouth on fire but the food wasnât spicy at all I had to add hot sauce to make it spicy. This restaurant does not deserve to be called a Mexican restaurant because the cooks do not know what Mexican cuisine truly is. There are many other Mexican restaurants in Roanoke/salem that offer a better tasting options and also have better prices! I mean who wants to pay 4 dollars for a soda or tea?! Overpriced food that isnât up to par for human...
Read moreFirst Time & Last Time Eating At This "So Salem" Restaurant. They appear to be like other Mexican restaurants, bringing out the customary chips but without salsa. The chips were not warm as expected. We asked for salsa and got it. So then it appears we got the complimentary chips and salsa. When the check came, we magically owed $2.99 for the chips and salsa. Nice little trick to make a buck. The service? Highly questionable. We thought the Mexican waitress understood our order. Then a few minutes later, an English speaking Mexican waitress came out to ask what we ordered. The wait staff should at least speak broken English to American customers. The food was so/so, not something we would go looking for ever again. This restaurant just opened recently, but apparently used tables and chairs that came from the old Shang Hai restaurant. Everything looks dated and old already. We didn't go for the decor, but just couldn't help noticing. The restaurant did not look as if it were professionally operated, it appeared and sounded chaotic. There are too many issues and there are too many really good Mexican restaurants in the Roanoke Valley for this one to survive. If it does somehow survive, good luck to those who think this restaurant is "So Salem." We would not leave even one star, but the review would not post without...
Read moreMy husband and I visited this evening and enjoyed our meal! Service was friendly. The food was delicious! We shared the cheesy birria tacos, as recommended by our sweet waitress. We also shared the chicken enchiladas special and the street corn in a cup. All were great, but my favorites were the tacos (and the chips and salsa pre-mealđ.) So good! My husband thought the street corn cup was too liquidy at the bottom, but I liked it.đ€·đ»ââïžI guess it depends on your preference.
The servings for the money were fair. It was maybe a little pricey, but there was a lot of food on each plate, and we went home with leftovers.
The only reason 4 stars were given for service is because we were the only ones in the restaurant, and it did take a while for our meal to come. It didn't bother us, as we weren't in a hurry, but if you are pressed for time, it may be something you want to keep in mind.
We will...
