Basically the only place to go for down-home good Chinese here in Salem Oregon. Food is always fresh no old veggies or meat sitting around to serve. Prices are more than reasonable. The family that owns it is always friendly and quick to take your order. Whenever we have need of going out they have anything from soup to food my family always goes here. Back when they would sit people in the restaurant they were always very friendly and never left you without checking in on you several times. Facemasks are required right now and to go ordering is your only option. But if you call ahead they will make sure your food is done at the time they say. It will be hot and fresh not sitting under a hot plate. They are happy to make substitutions and don’t charge a fortune for them. They are allergy friendly and very knowledgeable about their product and will tell you if there’s something in it that you need to avoid. Love this place can’t say enough good things about the staff!

Very concerned about the food safety of this resteraunt... I walked in today for the first time and nobody was out front so I walk towards the back and sitting there in the lobby is a big tub of raw shrimp, not iced or anything... BIG red flag, but I had already called in my food order so I proceeded to pick up my order anyhow. After getting the wrong order first I paid for the correct one which was messed up and expensive, I asked for orange chicken with upgraded side to chicken lo mein and a side of bbq pork, I received a large orange chicken, large chicken lo mein and large bbq pork totalling nearly $40... The guy I tried talking to didn't seem to understand my concerns so I paid and left. The food was fine as far as flavor, the pork was dry however and the chicken was bland and cut in to Large pieces making it hard to eat.

I have driven past here almost daily for several years and finally decided to give them a try for lunch the other day. I was not disappointed! I was seated right away and offered tea. Everything came out quickly and was hot. The portion sizes are on par with every other Chinese restaurant I’ve gone to, but the chow mein is the best I’ve had! I am a garlic lover, and I could see the minced garlic in the vegetables. The breading on the sweet and sour pork was perfectly done, though I would have liked more of the sauce (personal preference, my husband would have thought it was just right). Prices are reasonable, and I will definitely be back. I’m disappointed I haven’t tried them sooner!

Are you in Salem and in need of relatively cheap and good quality, Chinese food? Then DON’T come here!

Pros: Portions were big. Cheap.

Cons: Terrible service, mediocre Chinese food.

Overall: I would give Kuong Chans 0 stars out of 5. I will never visit this place again! It’s a shame too; during previous visits everything was fine. Sure, it wasn't the best Chinese restaurant I've ever been to, but at least the food was decent and the service was relatively friendly. I work at a number of oriental restaurants and I know what I’m talking about when I say this is the worst Chinese restaurant I've been to.

Service: When I first decided to eat at Kuong Chans, I happened to be in Salem and I was very hungry. I remembered the good memories I had with my family as a younger child, so I decided—“you know what, Kuong Chans sounds alright, I’ve been there before, and the food was relatively cheap and tasty.” As I entered the restaurant I was expecting the usually greeting of the owner and to be sat down with ease. But instead I found a totally empty restaurant. After a few seconds I called out for some one. I just stood there for a few minutes. I should have just left then! It was the perfect signal! I was finally approached by a Chinese woman who abruptly told me to sit where ever I wanted, so I picked a booth and sat there patiently. She then went into one of the booths and start watching TV! I would occasionally ask for perhaps some spicy mustard or more water, I would get a reply of, “Wha’ do ya wan?” I would repeat my request and be interrupted by a “K K.” she would hastily get me what I asked for and almost throw it on the table, only to go back and start watching more TV! The whole time I felt like I was more of a nuisance to her than a customer, something that had to be dealt with so that she could watch more TV. She even got mad at me a couple times; giving that sigh that only a teenage girl would give to her mother. When it was time to pay she finally started to act a little nicer, I assumed, to get a better tip. Like I said before, the service was awful, the worst I’ve ever had.

Cost: The cost was actually really cheap. I paid no more than 7 dollars for pork and vegetables over rice and a hot and sour soup. They did however charge an extra 50 cents for fried instead of steamed rice. The cost of the meal was probably the only redeemable factor of the meal.

Speed: Since there was no one else in the restaurant during my meal, I would say that the time it took for the food to be prepared was ok. It took a total of about 15-20 minutes for my entrée to come out after ordering.

Quality: The hot and sour soup was not the best, fairly watered down. The pork and vegetable over rice was pretty good, however there was only a little bit of pork and a massive amount of vegetables, and the brown sauce could have been more enhanced. Pretty much any other Chinese restaurant could have done better.

Portions: The portions were big, I’ll give them that. But just about 95% of my vegetable and pork over rice was rice and vegetable! I should have expected it from the...

My family was in town for an event on Saturday and decided to eat here. There was no one to seat you for a few minutes. We got the menu and there are no substitutions you can make at all. The host said the cook will not allow it! After taking the order it was hard to tell what was on the plate, one order was for almond chicken and what she got was unrecognizable. When we asked what it was, he said it was vegetable almond chicken not fried patty almond chicken, they don't have that. He didn't offer to replace it with something else as she did not want that. During this time one of our party had a surprised look on her face, there was such confusion with the menu and the service and what we got. I asked her if everything was ok?? When my order came out, it was all wrong and I told them it was unacceptable. They took it back and came out with my order. I tasted the pork chow mein and I have never tasted anything so terrible before, I could not eat it! The sweet and sour pork was terrible too! It was a very uncomfortable position to be in. We should have just left at the first sign of trouble. After paying $70.00 for this meal (that's with the tip), we got home and the party that had the surprised look on her face told me she saw a mouse 2 times when we were in there!!! She said she doesn't know if it was the same mouse 2 times or 2 mice!! Oh my gosh!! Probably a whole family of mice!! She said she didn't know what to do because of all the confusion going on!! Do not waste your time or money going here! I'm sick just...

Extremely rude. Repeated themselves numerous times (loudly, as to humiliate me) because they didn't understand me. So they were rude. They also quoted a different price for the crab rangoons (Crab meat Wontons), and charged me more. They didn't realize I had called for the price previously. I got it after about 45 minutes of waiting for 6 crab rangoons (Crab meat wontons), I got my order home and took a great big bite, only to find fried human hair wrapped around the rangoons (wontons) and my throat. I tried to reach them afterwards and they didn't answer. Once I was able to contact someone 2 days later, they actually asked me to prove that there was hair in my food, from the previous days. I told them obviously I had thrown it away, Being seafood no one ate for 2 days. They told me they couldn't do anything about it and that they had no number for me to call and file a complaint to. I will NEVER go back to this place. (EDIT FOR COMPANY REPLY) Yes, I'm sure that it's the right company. I go to the Walgreens down the block from it...
