Mad Mack's Burger — Restaurant in San Antonio

I will preface my review with this: I try to be fair in my reviews as I understand someone's business could potentially be affected. That being said, stopped in on Saturday and this is the second time my family and I have eaten here (first time was about 4 years ago). The first experience was top notch, the food was on point, and I would have recommended you eat here any time you get a craving for a burger. Fast forward to Saturday, don't, just don't. Upon entering the establishment, you are hit in the face with a very off-putting odor. That should have been enough to leave, but I remembered how good the food was, so we ordered. Even though there were only two other people dining, the lady taking our order seemed a little irritated that we weren't making selections fast enough. Maybe she was having a bad day, I don't know. Sat down at our table and the table, chairs, and floor were sticky and didn't appear to have ever been cleaned. There was dust everywhere and the place just looked and smelled like the owners don't have any pride in their establishment. The food came out fairly quickly and looked delicious. The burger was good, not what I would call the best, but it was good. The fries were soggy and I'm not sure if the taste was from the fries or the ketchup, but the taste was off. None of us got sick, which I'm thankful for. I would honestly dine here again if the place was cleaned up and returned to its former glory, but based off of this experience, I would have to take a pass...

The day we decided to make the trip across town to try MM was one of the hottest days this summer. The restaurant had all the ceiling fans going and one or two stand alones as well, but it was not very comfortable inside. As first timers we were given a quick primer on how to order by one of the two women working there. I ordered the flagship burger which was two beef patties with two onion rings sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches. My wife got the regular cheeseburger.

We picked a back table and sat down to sweat while we waited for our burgers. My wife's order was wrong and had to be remade. My burger was so tall that I had to take the two onion rings off in order to give myself a fighting chance of taking a bite out of the thing. I squashed the white bread down and was able to wrangle a bite. The bacon was good and the burger was tasty. Nothing extraordinary, but the build of the burger was certainly interesting. Fries were fairly usual and frozen not fresh.

The whole experience probably would have been better in cooler weather and without having to have a burger redone (it came with onions which my wife specifically said to leave off). For the locals living near MMs, it's a good burger alternative to Nicha's Mexican Restaurant just down the street. Next to Chris Madrid's, which I use as the gold standard, well let's just say it doesn't quite cut...

Expect different treatment if you are not white. Staff are your typical old fashion racists who are still living in the past. Never experienced anything like this and didn’t think places like this exist in 2022, especially on the Southside. Woman at the counter was very rude. Scoffed and made a rude comment under her breath because I ordered for my husband. She sat me and my family in the back corner on the opposite side away from everyone else-right next to the only other Hispanic couple that was there. Male cook walked in and out of the kitchen very often-would smile and greet everyone else, but would look at me and my family with a strange look and then walk away without saying anything. Food was very bland-no flavor or seasoning. And I found a hair at the bottom of my plate-not sure if that was intentional. Should have left as soon as we walked in and caught the smell of sewer. Decided to go because of the 5 star reviews. The food looked good so I didn’t bother to read the lower rated reviews until I went home afterwards-only to find that people of color had the same experience. Save your dignity and your money. Don’t waste anything...
