I love Cajun food and was excited to try this restaurant while I was on a work trip to the area, especially after seeing all the great reviews. My favorite Cajun dishes are gumbo, jambalaya and beignets and couldn’t wait to try Bud’s versions. When I got there I was kindly greeted and asked if I had a lunch reservation. I replied no, and was worried and excited at the same time. I was thinking, “this place must be awesome if you need a reservation for one during lunch.” They were very busy, and to my relief, the hostess was able to find a table for me. The server was very nice and answered any questions I had. I ordered and didn’t have to wait long for my food. Gumbo - I ordered a cup of gumbo. It had a nice rich color from the roux. There was lots of meat and had a nice taste. However, the gumbo to rice ratio was completely off. There was maybe a spoonful of rice in the whole cup making the gumbo a soup consistency where it should be more of a stew. I also ordered jambalaya and had to put some of the jambalaya rice into the gumbo to make the gumbo a consistency that I could eat. Jambalaya - I ordered the cup instead of the entree. The flavor was just OK to me. The boxed Zatarain’s jambalaya mix you find in the grocery store tastes better. The saving grace was the meat/sausage was great, but there wasn’t much meat. Maybe the full entree would be better for more meat but given the lack of taste for the rice, I would not recommend. Beignets - What I was looking forward to the most was the beignets and it was the biggest letdown. Beignets should be tasty pillows from heaven covered in powdered sugar. These were just flat, crunchy disappointments covered up in powdered sugar. Instead of being something you pull apart like a donut, they were flat, sad, and would snap. If this is what Californians think beignets are then I feel sorry for you and the heavenly delight your tastebuds are missing. I’m grateful the server realized I did not like them at all and took it off my bill. The gumbo, jambalaya and beignets from Bud’s might work in CA but would not fly in Louisiana or along the Gulf Coast. As a Southern that frequently eats Cajun cuisine (at least 3-5 times a month), I was looking forward to recommending this restaurant to coworkers that will be working in the area. Instead it was a big disappointment and I cannot recommend to others.

I am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Bud's is where I go for that creole flair when I'm missing home (been in SD for the last 3 years). Great style and authentic atomsphere. My server, Michael, was the best. I might have waited 7 mins for my food at any one time. Thanks, Michael! First off, any place serving good beer is ok in my book, but a Louisiana establishment must serve Abita Amber, arguably the best beer sourced in LA. The Boudin Balls (labeled as 'Bites' on the menu) were done perfectly, and in true southern fashion no extra wasted dishes for sauces. The stone ground mustard and the fantastic remoulade squeezed out right onto the plate. Love it! Ordering a Shrimp Poboy at a southern spot is like ordering a quesadilla in a TexMex or Mexcian restuarant, it is simple but must be done right. Bud's nailed it!!! My hat is off to the fry guy/gal and the chef. The batter coating for the shrimp was spot on and cooked to absoltue perfection, juicy not greasy, while keeping the shrimp plump, and not mushy. It's served on the traditional fluff on the inside, crispy on the outside french bread with thin cut lettuce, and a smear of remoulade. Served with really well seasoned fries and pickles on the side. If I had but one small complaint, the fries were a tad salty, just a tad. I also enjoyed a side of the seafood gumbo. No surprise here, cooked to perfection. Nailed the seasonings with room to add a little spice if you prefer more (honestly a requirement in a place not use to all the spices like SD). And of course, I had to order the beignets! Bud's did something a little non-traditional and they nailed it. The crispy outside yet slightly fluffy, soft, and classically hollow inside beignets where served over a thin bed of strawberry awesomeness. It was almost like a reduction and it was fantastically sweet which well compliments the dense fried pastery. Do Not pass on the Beignets! The price was pretty great for SD; approx. $55 after a beer, appetizer, entree, entree add-on (gumbo), dessert, and tip. Overall, Bud's will remain my go-to in San Diego for Louisiana Flair Foods and atmosphere! From the bottom of my foody-heart, Thank You Bud's for doing it right and bringing that much needed spicy culture to sweet n sunny San Diego.

We found ourselves hankering for Creole delights and headed to Bud's for a taste of Louisiana. We had to get some drinks and that would be our first road bump, they don't have a liquor license so don't expect anything more than mixed cocktails (20% or less ABV). She had a white wine and I had the Arnold Palmer which was great, a perfect balance of tea and lemonade. We started with the jalapeno cornbread muffin, it came out dry and rather bland. Next was the jambalaya which came out with great spice, small peppers and pieces of chicken sprinkled throughout. It was okay, my biggest issue was the lack of sausage. You don't get to put Andouille sausage on the ingredient list if there's one of them, that's not how it works. The main dish was the star of the evening, shrimp and grits. It was clear the moment the placed on the table that the sauce was made in-house. Amazing spice, creaminess, and ultimately coated every shrimp perfectly. The grits needed the sauce but ultimately had a pleasant buttery taste that added texture. Easily the most appealing dish we saw come out the door all evening. We finished with a beignets, it's a staple so why not, right? They came out hot, perfectly airy and the sauce was wonderful (strawberry-kiwi). I'd be remissed if I didn't say how amazing the service was, every server was attentive and thorough. We gave it a 4 star based on the food, with the cornbread and jambalaya leaving us wanting while the shrimp and beignets knocked it out of the park.

Today I decided to take my two sisters out for lunch at this restaurant and had the most unpleasant experience! Katie did not have the pleasure of serving me and my family she had a very nasty attitude from the second she came up to our table. The first two times I noticed her attitude I didn't say anything but then my sister asked for a different drink and she snatched the cup rudely and brought her drink slammed it on the table my sister apologized to her because she could feel the animosity then fast forward she comes to take our order and at this point I'm fed up and irritated because she's blatantly being rude with her her vibe the way she's looking at us and her tone is disrespectful and not friendly or welcoming at all so I ask the host to come over and ask for a manger but he doesn't come in until 4pm so I let her know how I'm feeling about the waitress she says okay I'll speak to her & after speaking to her Katie gets more upset with our table and comes over and slams the appetizer plates on the table and slams everything she brings to the table so I call the host to come back over and ask her why she didn't switch out my waitress after I expressed my feelings and told her I didn't appreciate how Katie was treating us , she then explains she doesn't know why Katie is acting that way and she did speak to her but doesn't explain why she didn't give new server serve us . Also it is not busy it's only about 3 other family's in the restaurant so it wasn't super busy for anybody working at the time . I take it upon my self to ask another server can he bring out the rest of our food and finish helping us because I'm more than irritated with the host and the waitress now and he agrees and he is so nice to us to being super sweet super helpful checking on us letting us know recommendations which Katie did none of the above she definitely never asked if we okay or needed anything the whole time she was "helping" us . And then I noticed how she is interacting with the other tables and she's seems so happy and friendly smiling having conversations just overall being a good waitress to to everybody else and I also notice me and my family are the only black table she is serving so I'm not sure if she is has an issue with black people if she is racists or she just decided she wasn't going to be helpful or a good server to us even though we never did anything wrong or said anything rude to her but it really upset me that me and my family were treated this way for no reason we paid for our food (153.20 to be exact) just like everybody else the only difference is that WE ARE BLACK ! Eddy was the server that helped us in the end so I did give him a really nice tip to show my appreciation because the waitress and host did not care about us or our feelings or anything at all they treated us as if we weren't important and the only reason I can think is because of the color of our skin I'm so disappointed in this establishment and I will never be returning you will never get me or my family's business . I also returned around 5 pm to speak to the Manager and was told he wouldn't be in until Wednesday morning. So I will go back on Wednesday to speak to him personally and let him know about my experience face to face . They have this host her name is RIANE in charge that doesn't care for my people and they have waitresses KATIE to be exact that choose to be openly rude and disrespectful to my people with no authority watching over or to correct their mistakes . They are allowed to treat my people as they please with no consequences and it's really sad so I will pray for them and hope nobody ever has to go through what me and my family went...

It's a nice place that I had wanted to try for a while, but they were generally closed any time I was in the area. We were there around 11:30 am. There were a few tables in use, and, even though mom walks with a cane, the waitress seated us toward the very back, away from the other diners, and turned on the table lamp. Some of the lights were off, including the entire light strip above us, so the lamp helped. There were 3 wait staff, so I'm not sure why our waitress was so busy, but she was. Though, I suppose seating, waiting, serving, and cleaning tables would do it. Anyway, she brought water right away and gave us time to peruse the menu (it was our 1st time there). We decided to split the fried catfish and fries and have the lemon blueberry cheesecake for dessert. When the food came, she brought us a 2nd plate to split it. The catfish was a little dry and overdone, but otherwise tasted good. I should have asked for tartar sauce (it didn't come with it). The fries were well seasoned and mostly tasted good, though a few were overcooked. We didn't see the waitress again until well after all the food and water were consumed. It took quite a while to flag her down to get our previously ordered dessert. When we did, we asked her to mention to the chef that the fish was a bit dry and overdone. While we waited dessert, we finally got our water refilled. It was small but delicious. We waited a while for the check, though by then the restaurant was pretty full. I gave mom my card to pay for it while I went to the restroom. The waitress took the card while I was gone, but then we waited a long time for her to bring it back. I finally went to the front to finish the transaction. Mom said she flagged down the waitress to let her know I had gone up front to get my card. She said the waitress was surprised she hadn't brought it to us yet and rushed over to bring it to me. I signed the paperwork and gave her a medium tip, but there was no one to hand it to. By then, there was a line to be seated. I paid just over $40 (including tip)for a lunch that mom and I shared, with only water to drink. It was nice, but I probably will only go back for a special occasion. The men at the table next to us were seated and served by a different person. They seem to be regulars, who knew their waiter, and they got more attention than we did. They discussed the Louisiana chicken and how the cream sauce is made fresh to order, not prepared ahead. Wish we had ordered that. It sure looked good. But my mama's family is from the Gulf Coast, and the 1st thing we try at a place with Deep South food is always the catfish. I'd recommend going when it isn't so busy, but they're closed between...

1 visit down A LOT MORE to go!I was truly in the mood for some excellent southern friendliness and also I sure discovered it in San Diego right here at Bud's! Before diving into the foods, I advise any person preparing a journey right here to book or be prepared to wait a while! When I came with my gf and her family members, we waited 45 mins ... This joint is all regarding intimacy! Also the outdoor patio that is a grander place than inside was snugly packed. When we awaited the long time we had an opportunity to take a look at the menu and also get our tastebuds desire and also our mouths watering from all the food alternatives. Fresh off a trip from The Bay as well as one of their leading creole joints, and now in SD with similar foods, with relatively endless choices, you simply intend to attempt everything!!! My gf obtained the Crawfish Etoufee, her mom grabbed the Blackened Catfish St. Charles, her papa selected the Louisiana Hen Supper, as well as I rolled with the Fried Shrimp Po Boy!These options followed the very best web server offered us an excursion of the menu after we were unsure of what to select. He was really patient with our inquiries and also exceptionally knowledgeable concerning every food selection product and general we just enjoyed him as well as his playfulness as well as the personality that he offered us.The Crawfish Etoufee was without a doubt LEADING RACK!! Although we all had our separate meals, we sort of shared a little bit right here and there as well as with an unanimous choice, the Crawfish Etoufee was everyones favorite. I can't even truly clarify just how it tastes besides outstanding. It was my initial ever before time trying it. I valued the spice degree. It was too excellence. The Louisiana Poultry and the Blacken Catfish St. Charles was likewise truly good! My Shrimp Po Young boy was delicious, I simply really did not really like the aioli that it included. It was excellent, yet the quantity that was sinking my sandwich threw it off balance. We purchased the Jalepe\u00f1o Cornbread Muffins as well as them thangs was bite sized!! haha and they were meeehhh. I can state you aren't missing anything if you do not attempt them. On our way out we included a togo order of their COFFEE SHOP Du Monde beignets. They were rather great, I simply desire I purchased even more to go!Btw, this location is concealing in a commercial business plaza. I would remain in difficulty if I operated in this...
