Golden Donut — Restaurant in San Diego

I don't write reviews often but when I do it is usually in the positive, unfortunately today I had a very poor experienced here. Now this is my local neighborhood donut store. the school across the street I attended in elementary school and would walk over after school to get a donut. but life took me away from this neighborhood and as chance has it, I have found my way back. this morning I was looking for a shop to provide my office with morning pastries and was hoping to make it a 2x or 3x a week routine. because I had not been there in so long and their menu was different and changed a lot, my friends family was not running the shop anymore which is understandable because 20+ yrs of running the same business....so I asked one of the 2 ladies working which I am assuming was the mom, was short with me. I asked how much for a dozen then she snipped and said 17 and up, almost like she didn't want to be there. so I asked how much for a half dozen. she waved her tongs around at each donut and said what ever each cost I asked her how much was the chocolate bar. she was once again short with me 1.75. then I ask how about the original chocolate, once again snippy, 1.75 so I asked so they are all the same? being short again said no! so I said give me two chocolate bar. paid my 3.50 and left I will not be returning. last note I got to the office, took a bite of the donut, doughy, and oily. re-affirms my decision to not go back there. what a way to destroy a company my friend's family shed blood, tears, and sweat on. the usually old clientele that use to frequent the place was no where to be seen. I placed a special order and prepaid, but was called in to work early so didn't pick them up in the morning.

She wouldn't take my phone number as i was going to pick them up at 830 am.

It says they close at 7pm, but at 5:49pm, they were closed when i arrived....

No one is answering, i better get donuts or a refund

Went by the next day, and she pointed at the donuts, saying "why didn't you call me?" "It's not my fault"

I replied that i got called in early and once i got to work i can't let myself get distracted so i focus on work; i work at a very busy logistics company.

She said she would make me another batch, and i said i would be there Sunday morning 800am.

Sunday morning at 805am i show up with my wife and;

1. the donuts are not ready, guess she thought i wasn't showing up
2. she MADE me pay 1/2 price; since i prepaid, i am now paid 1 & 1/2 price for a half dozen donuts
3. my wife was surprise by her attitude, she was very mad, like she was doing its a favor by charging its 1/2 price.... I ALREADY PAID

The donuts are ok, and at $7+$3.50=$10.50 for half a dozen???

They re not THAT good.

Never going back there.

Not only did she lose me and my family, but i will recommend people go to other places.

Like; I recommend people go to Sunny Donuts on Clairemont Mesa the people there are super nice, or The Donut Bar down town which has gotten awesome reviewers and for good reason, their donuts are awesome!!!

Their prices are better, and they don't give you any attitude or...

I live in the neighborhood and stop by the Golden Donut often. To me, the most magical thing about this place is the vibe. Every time I go I feel like I've stepped into Mister Roger's Neighborhood. Sandy, the owner, is always friendly to me, and we often chitchat. There's a group of senior guys who hang out inside often, laughing and having the best time. Everyone is nice to each other. It just makes you feel good. Plus there are shaded tables outside were you can enjoy your coffee and donuts.

I would highly recommend the Golden Donut iced coffee. It is absolutely amazing, but get ready for the caffeine rush and the sugar high! It's high octane stuff.

My favorite thing to eat is the egg and cheese croissant sandwich. The croissant is melt-in-your mouth buttery, and the sandwich itself is super satisfying.

The donuts are pretty good, too. I often get a simple sugar donut. They are consistently fresh.

I see that a few reviewers have commented about the place being cash-only. They now have Venmo, too. I will say that I think this place is a bit expensive now - they recently raised their prices. I still think it's worth a visit for a nice, old-timey donut...
