This was my first time trying kava! A friend of mine suggested this place when I told him that I wasn't drinking. I've seen this place a thousand times, but never really checked it out. We went in and the bartender (what do you call them??) gave me a sample of their OG kava since I've never had one before. I did not like it, but perhaps that's what it's supposed to taste like? The customer next to me said that the OG is usually too strong for a first-timer. My friend suggested trying the "cocktail" version and yes this turned out good! It was a little sweet and served on ice, it was a great, relaxing, refreshing drink. We managed to find a couple of seats by the bar. The place is always packed, but everyone here was very friendly; they would make space for you to squeeze in, chatted with you etc. Seemed like a good place to meet new people. They also have a cabinet full of board games!

Honestly, I am just not sure I totally “get it”. Wandered in here with a friend. It’s an atmosphere similar to a bar, everyone inside was socializing. It’s all very low key but everyone is drinking this. Kava, if you’ve never tried it, is a very acquired taste. The menu mentions the historical and cultural significance of this drink, which makes me wonder about this type of setting. In any case, you walk up to the bar and order directly. The drink is probably better flavored (we tried it in all its natural glory) but again, maybe it’s typically not consumed so casually. With just a couple of sips, my lips and throat were tingling. It was a fairly relaxing experience, but I’m not so sure it was for me.

I really love this place. My wife and I have been going here for a while now. When we got sober, we were looking for an alternative to be at a bar and drinking alcohol, and this fulfill all of that. We get a nice medicinal drink and are able to relax. Listen to some good music and talk to the incredible staff here. I hear they are even looking to start some karaoke, open mic nights, and even have a trivia night coming up.

I really wanted to like Kava Collective, but my experience was disappointing on almost every level. The atmosphere felt unwelcoming and poorly maintained — instead of a calm, grounding space, it came across as chaotic and uncomfortable.

The staff were dismissive and inattentive, which immediately set the wrong tone. When I had questions, they seemed uninterested in explaining anything or making me feel welcome, and the overall vibe was careless.

The kava itself was equally underwhelming: it tasted weak and poorly prepared, with none of the depth or effects I’ve experienced at other reputable kava bars. On top of that, the hygiene behind the bar felt questionable, and wait times were far longer than they should’ve been given how empty the place was.

To make matters worse, I felt overcharged for what little I received, and the lack of clear information about what I was ordering left me feeling misled.

Overall, the combination of bad service, weak product, poor cleanliness, and inflated prices made this one of the worst kava experiences I’ve had. For the reputation this place claims to have, I expected much better. I won’t be returning, and I’d strongly suggest others look elsewhere for a genuine, high-quality kava experience. Not gather,...

Kava Collective is hands down the best kava bar in San Diego! From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. The vibe here is chill and inviting, making it the perfect spot to unwind, relax, and connect with great people.

Their kava and kratom drinks are top-notch, expertly prepared, and always fresh. Whether you’re a kava connoisseur or trying it for the first time, the knowledgeable staff is always happy to guide you through the menu and find the perfect drink to suit your vibe. The bartenders are friendly, helpful, and truly passionate about what they do.

The seating is cozy, with plenty of space to hang out solo or with friends. Whether you’re looking for a calm place to work, a laid-back social atmosphere, or just a place to escape the hustle of the city, Kava Collective has it all.

Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for a relaxing, community-driven space with amazing drinks and even better energy. This place is a hidden gem—I’ll definitely...
