UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Staff remains really friendly and helpful. Ordered online this time and the pick up process was really smooth, fast and easy.
We got two of the CP No3. (Banh Mi). Very tasty sandwich! Don't know if it really felt like a Banh Mi (the lack of pickles as others have mentioned for sure is a factor here). That said, it's genuinely very tasty and with everything involved here (good quality meats and home made bread) it certainly feels more worth the $16 than the egg salad.
*I still think that $16 before tax and tip for an egg salad sandwich is nuts even here in SF.
We also got 2 of the cookies, they generously included the 3rd cookie they make gratis. I think the chocolate chip is excellent, the oatmeal raisin is great, peanut butter I would not order again.
The passionfruit spritz thing is still delicious as was the Vietnamese iced coffee!

ORIGINAL 3 STAR REVIEW: Charles Phan is a famous SF chef. We were stoked to see him opening an egg sandwich and banh mi shop in the mission. We went on their very first day so please take that into consideration when reading (we do plan to revisit and update this review in a few weeks).
TLDR SPACE: Gorgeous space with a beautiful little shop full of fancy MM Clay ceramics and interesting condiments to buy.
TLDR SERVICE: Everyone was very nice, thanked us for coming to support them on their first day and were overall very welcoming and helpful.
TLDR FOOD: We got the meat ball sandwich, egg salad sandwich, and passion fruit sprintz.
The meatball sub was fine but it just wasn't my favorite meatball sub. Over all, not super flavorful, the meatball texture was just kind of mushy and the bread was pretty soggy.
The egg salad was actually boarder line bad. Really, really felt like the sandwich had been pre-made and left to chill in the fridge to help speed up their throughput. Extremely sloppy, didn't stay together, way too much mustardy mayo (not super pleasant and all you could really taste). Just really not a great sandwich at any price. I did enjoy the plentiful dose of chive on the top though.
Passion fruit spritz - Delicious.
TLDR EXPERIENCE: I think they're working on finding their rhythm but currently order fulfillment is SLOWWWWWWWW. We showed up with almost no line visible (1:45pm-ish) and ended up waiting like 30 minutes to get that (possibly pre-made) egg salad sandwich and a meatball sub. I imagine if they had a real line you'd wait a very very very long time.
TLDR PRICING/ VALUE: Kind of shocking that every sandwich is uniformly $16. Like $16 banh mi.... ok I guess, it is SF.... but $16 egg salad sandwich? That better be special! As has been mentioned... a $16 sandwich with tax and a 20% tip puts you in the low 20s and I think you really have to really deliver for that kind of money... these guys just don't feel like they're doing that right now. If you ever tried AL's Deli, this place has a similar vibe. Flashy, splash build out, interesting sounding menu, hot chef, but ultimately disappointing food.
We plan to go back in a few weeks and give them another go once they've had time to settle in and iron out the kinks. If a $20 sandwich is a luxury, I'd recommend waiting to try these guys or going to Turner's Kitchen ($13-$17) or Dinosaurs...
Read moreMy husband found this gem of a lunch spot since it's close to his work. I finally got to try it for the first time, and it didn't disappoint! I'm of Vietnamese heritage, so my expectations are high. I got the CP's 3 Banh Mi, which is the most traditional Vietnamese one on the menu. It was so so good. I could have eaten a whole can of whatever pate they used in there alone. The bread had great texture, but didn't scrape the roof of my mouth when I ate it.
The Vietnamese coffee is delicious but super strong. I asked them to split it into two cups so I could share with my friend, and it still packed a punch.
The sea salt chocolate cookies are to die for. They are super chewy, and they have a nutty/toffee/caramel taste to them, probably from browned butter or molasses(?). Whatever the secret is, I'm on board. Chef threw in a free cookie for us because my husband is a returning customer! So generous of him even though we are happy to support small business during this tough time.
We can't wait for The Slanted Door to reopen in November!
No pics because I was too busy enjoying my food, but I am already trying to figure out when...
Read moreOrdered the OG#3 and crispy pork belly. Seems like the $20 sandwich is becoming a thing (looking at you flour + water).
The pork maintains its crispy skin but the portion I got was quite oversalted. The sliced cucumber does little to balance that out, there's a lack of acidity. The pork is not dry, but not juicy either.
OG#3 was more balanced, at least a bit of acidity. The mayo and maybe pate was nice too- there was richness but I say maybe pate because you don't really taste liver or umami. The cold cuts seemed fresh and were on the lighter side. There's something pickled in here thankfully. Milder sandwich than the pork belly.
Sandwiches are reasonably sized for a healthy portion, which means maybe undersized for $20. The bread is very airy and squishes down, but the outside crust does seem to require some tearing through, it doesn't bite through easily. I respect the approach to modernize and perhaps bring higher quality ingredients to the table, oddly the execution of individual components seems to be mostly fine but the actual balance of the...
