I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. I went there on a Sunday night for dinner. Order 3 dishes and all of them were DISAPPOINTING. The noodle dish was probably the only palatable dish amongst the 3. Ordered Krungthai Tofu which is like a tofu tempura in a sauce with a few slices of bamboo shoots and 2-3 pieces of shrimps and calamari. The Song Kreung Fried Noodle is like a dry version of Rad Na Noodle. The worst is the Stuffed Calamari Green Curry which was not as described. The description of the dish is completely misleading. When the dish was served, I immediately stirred through the dish looking for the so-called stuffed calamari and found the item(s) being buried underneath the curry and the garnishes/complementary ingredients of thai eggplants, ginger and curry. It is unrecognizable as “calamari” but instead looking more like a cut up sausage link(s). The so-called minced pork was more like a paste or sausage stuffing and the taste is weird; not a good flavor at all. I waved down a staff whom turned out to be the manager according to the server whom took my order. I pointed out to the manager about the description being very misleading and that the server had failed to warn us that the dish is not fitting the description, vice versa. Instead of telling us about the stuffed calamari being “sausage-like”, the server kept emphasizing that the dish has thai eggplant which is not even the main ingredient. Anyway the manager asked if I like to “order something else instead and take it(stuffed calamari) to go”. That is the most ridiculous response I get as she had agreed that it is not made/cooked as described on the menu and is in fact their own rendition of “stuffed calamari” vs the traditional preparation of stuffed calamari. With that said, I would imagine that she would replace the dish instead of DOING NOTHING. Since the whole episode was a total letdown, it ruined my appetite and I asked for a container from the server for the green curry sauce & side eggplants and left every single pieces of the “calamari sausage” on the plate to make a point. I also reminded the server that she should have warned us about the CALAMARI being sausage-like instead of emphasizing that the dish contains thai eggplant which is already in the description of the dish. This is the most bizarre and bad customer service experience. Honestly who would pay $25.95 for weird tasting sausage…I chose that dish thinking it is real/fresh minced meat stuffed in calamari. WILL DEFINITELY NOT be returning and I’m writing this review to let it serves as a warning for future patron(s). Overall, this restaurant only has “Americanized/Westernized” thai food. DEFINITELY NOT AUTHENTIC thai cuisine. If that is your preference in terms of taste, and you are feeling generous to pay for mediocre, sub-standard food, head down to this place. BUT I DO...
Read moreTL;DR: Ambience 4/5, Food 2/5 (for me - people who like blander food may enjoy it). Sorry, but I'm not visiting again.
New Krung Thai is at a really convenient location in The Village, so I really wanted to like it. The restaurant was very clean, if a little dim. Pop music played over the speakers. The Thai paintings and bronze idols on the walls always remind me of home (India) but with a little more "exotic" mixed in. The plates had scratches from years of use. At first glance, it seemed they had smudges. We considered asking for a new set. but they wouldn't come off. It was just the design. Odd, but let's just say it adds character. So far so good.
We ordered Vegetarian Pad Thai, Massaman curry w/ tofu and brown rice. It came suspiciously quickly. This was on a late Saturday afternoon when the restaurant was about half full. They gave us a little square tray with four condiments -- a spicy powder, chili sauce, pickled jalapenos and salt. I've eaten at a number of Thai places (in America) and the spicy powder thing was new to me, and really good. The Pad Thai was ok. The Massaman curry was served it in a shallow square dish where the gravy didn't cover the vegetables completely. I like my Massaman curry with a LOT more gravy (and more peanuts than any self-respecting chef would add). The food had high quality ingredients but was really bland. I didn't like it and struggled to finish. I'm eating from the to-go box as I write this, and it honestly tastes better now that the vegetables have had more time to absorb the flavor.
Overall, I did not have a good time. Maybe people who like American-style food where you eat each vegetable by itself, with a little gravy in the background, will like it. Never...
Read moreLet me preface: I've been a customer since this restaurant opened. Maybe not consistently because it gets expensive but at least 4-5visits a year. I usually stick to my go to - mango Sticky Rice, padseeew, phad Thai, the curries etc.
They're implementing a new menu? I forgot what it's called. Great.
I usually ask for my pad see ew with basil because I like the fragrance. Usually the server will tell me that it changes the flavor is that okay. For the past few years I skip around the menu and don't know when their policy changed. Currently, it's a no. They refuse to add, probably a management or chef's decision. Not because it's not available, I was extra annoyed that all my other dishes had basil but the one I really wanted it on did not. The way the server went about it was polite but also rubbed me the wrong way. He said he'll go check, and sent someone else to inform me no.
I had decided not to be rude and kept the order but it really was disappointing for me. It's been a few days now and it still rubs me the wrong way; unfortunately I don't think I'll ever come back. The pork stuffed calamari curry (had basil) was the most disgusting thing I had. I should've cancelled the whole order and left, regret so much that I didn't. Even though the mango Sticky Rice was delicious, I got it to go and went home to find the portions are significantly smaller than every time I've gotten it. Once one of my favorite restaurants, absolutely...
