It's been more than 2 years since I've been back here. The golf course had some changes, not too many thick bushes to lose balls, the fairways are nice but the tee boxes are spotty. The Sand Bunkers have no sands at all. The views are still beautiful. It was a Friday morning, I walked in and had a Tee Time available, lucky me. Senior rate is $36 walking, but I forgot the golf course is so long, especially the walk from the 17th back to the 18th is a long one since the bridge in the middle no longer or ever finished building. Next time I would rent a cart. 6.5 miles walking in the 86F heat really drained me although the sea breezes were cooler. The green is quite slow because the grass is thicker than most golf course. The golf course is still under renovation, quite a few holes are under construction. The fairways are nice, although some are still being fixed with new grass. Regardless, it's still a very nice golf course for the price. The pace was quite slow, but not bad for a Friday, it's almost 5 hr, Tee Off at 9:36 and out at 2:20PM. I would come back again when I have a day off, not sure how slow it would be on...
Read moreIt’s been a long time since I played the Tony lema (18 holes) —I usually just play the marina (9 holes). It always feels relaxing and comfortable. I used to think of this place as my second home, but today, I was really disappointed.
First, every time I play 9 holes with YOC, it’s supposed to be free. However, there have been several occasions where I was still charged. The staff at the Pro Shop seemed untrained or perhaps temporary, as they had to ask someone else to confirm whether YOC is actually free. It’s not about the money—it’s about the lack of professionalism.
Second, even the Junior Rates don’t start until 2 PM on weekends. That means junior golfers in the U.S. have to pay full price before 2 PM at this course. I find this really strange. I’ve played at many different courses, and usually, Junior Rates apply on weekends as well, or at least there’s a set junior weekend rate, like $25. But at Monarch Bay, juniors are charged full price—even if they’re preparing for a tournament the following week. Compared to other courses, the Pro Shop here doesn’t handle these situations as...
Read moreMonarch Bay Golf Course has been a tough test for anyones game for a long time. It was formally known as Tony Lima G.C. after a local who turned Pro and became a winner and celebrity. Located in San Leandros Marina the course was reenginered into a links style course. With the wind coming in off the bay, the length of the course and the new setup places a premium on hitting solid shots in good locations or being in some places that your going to lose a ball, take an unplayable lie and you'll have some big numbers on your card. Nice layout that's only got better over the years. There is also an Executive short course that is quite nice. Each course has a nice practice putting green, there is nice two level range to hit balls and work on your game. As well as a nice chipping green with a huge sand trap to work on your short game too. They have a nice little bar and cafe to relax and get some refreshments too. Worth...
