Christophe Rull Patisserie — Restaurant in San Marcos

This place is an absolute gem. I've been to bakeries and pastry shops all over the county in search of a croissant that can rival those in France. I finally found it. The first bite into the warm croissant, the crisp, flaky exterior giving way to the soft, buttery interior, was perfection. The current selection of baked goods is slim. Having just opened, Rull is opting to do a few things exceptionally well rather than offer a wide selection that's just so-so. I overheard the owner assure another customer that he plans to expand the menu over time. The macarons were beautiful, and the strawberry-rose champagne that I tried was divine. Customer service was top-notch. The owner, Christophe Rull, was friendly as he fulfilled orders and answered questions. When he caught me studying a rack of cinnamon rolls that hadn't been out at the time I ordered, he called after me and offered one. I visited this bakery last week and was very disappointed by the quality of the pastries as well as the beverage. I had ordered an almond croissant and a EXTRA hot vanilla latte. I received the pastries in a timely manner although they were not good at all, they dripped with butter and were very cold in the middle although I had asked for them to be warmed. I then had waited 10 minutes later and still had yet to receive my drinks although I was the only one in there. The cashier had recognized that I was still waiting for my drinks and gave me a complimentary macaroon and then a couple minutes later I then received my beverages. We ordered Ham and cheese sandwiches, an almond croissant, and a hazelnut brioche, along with coffees. The almond croissant was flaky and wonderful, the hazelnut brioche was a bit sweet for me, since I don't like things too sweet. It had a lot of chocolate hazelnut filling, so if you are a Nutella fan, you would really appreciate it! The ham and cheese sandwiches, albeit small, were amazing! Very flavorful and worth the cost. The coffee was very good and the service was excellent. They helped me to make a decision on what to get for a friend, to go. I definitely got him a ham and cheese sandwich.
