I have never, ever had any issues here! I've been here dozens of times in the time they've been in their current location. I cannot get enough of their chips and salsa (perfect blend of tomatoes and cilantro). If I'm feeling really good, which is most of the time, I get a large bowl of their white queso. Oh my heavenly!! About two years ago I saw on the menu "Avocado Chicken Enchilada." I haven't ordered anything else since. I haven't eaten an enchilada that good anywhere. Bring me a house margarita, big bowl of queso, and those enchiladas, and I'm in paradise. To top it all off the prices are as fabulous as the people who work there. The food comes out so quickly and still hot! I recently went in after a long day with family at my grandfather's funeral. We drove over 4 hours round trip to the grave site and came back to Sand Springs for dinner. They waited on the 20 of us like there were only 2 of us. They were so kind and patient. No tip was big enough. I did notice the background music though wasn't your typical Hispanic music. It was a local christian radio station. No extra stars for that but definitely a thumbs up. Don't get me wrong I love that station but the music isn't what makes this place. The service, quality and price of food, the laid back atmosphere, and all around goodness of the place - 5 stars. I am proud of this business to have not only lasted this long in Sand Springs but has grown so much that they're moving into a larger, new building into a developed part of town. Excellent job to El Maguey! Now that I've made this review, I am craving all that yummy food I mentioned above. Please check this place out if you...
Read moreStopped by on a Sunday evening. Not too crowded. Very nice, new building. Service was excellent. That's where it ends. We received out complimentary chips & salsa and ordered a small queso to go with the chips. We also ordered the beef and chicken fajitas for two. The small queso is $3.99 and it was small alright. It was approximately a 1/4 cup of queso in this little tiny bowl. Within 2 to 3 minutes, literally, our fajitas showed up. Pretty small portions for the side plates and the main fajita plate. The plate was sizzling but the meat was not very hot, almost as if it was prepared earlier in the day, way ahead of time, and just tossed on a hot plate and served. The beef and chicken looked about the size of shoe string french fries. I have never seen meat cut in such small square-profile pieces. The meat was bland with little seasoning. Combine that with the dry tasteless rice and unflavored bean paste and you have our flavorless meal. Salt and pepper did not even help. Nice building, great service but tasteless food and small portions at premium prices. I could get over the small portions if the food was on point. Definitely NOT satisfied and NOT going back.
Don't think I am heartless and just ranting without giving them a shot at redemption. We tried to talk to our authentic mexican server and explain our disappointment in the food and he literally tilted his head as if he could not completely understand the words. I feel like there was a genuine language barrier but he did not even try to get a manager or hostess to hear us out. He smiled politely and set our tab on the table and proceeded to...
Read moreEl Maguey's serves up an amazing meal. At El Maguey's attention to detail is rule #1. We arrived at a quarter past 5pm and there was a moderate crowd. With the kind and efficient service, the staff make you feel like you are the only patron. We appreciated this and the service staff had the nice gift of not interrupting the meal. They are cordial and show up at the right moment. For dinner we wanted to celebrate seafood from amazingly fresh to El Diablo spicy. Of course we started out with chips and salsa and El Maguey's standard salsa is creamier and I found I liked the cream of tomato texture. The hot sauce was savory with a little heat. We added the table hot sauce and it lit it up! For our drinks we ordered "The Skinny" a margarita drink and an Old Fashioned. These are a perfect pairing for the food we were served. For our appetizer we split a small ceviche. This dish was very fresh and I couldn't tell that the shrimp didn't just come out of the ocean. Spiced up orange and lime slices were on the edges. It is very satisfying to break a chip, make a ceviche bite, and enjoy while your spouse is doing the same. We prefer to always share and split as we enjoy the experience more that way. For dinner we had the El Diablo shrimp. It lived up to its name and by the 4th shrimp beads of sweat were forming. The entire experience was delightful and we will be going back. The beauty of the Old Fashioned as a drink is that at the end of everything there are 2 to 3 soaked cherries to eat as a palette cleanser and tamer of the heat. I would love to sample some good tequila with a meal and go from there! Cheers and...
