I was told that I could not put my medical alert dog in the child seat part of the shopping cart at Cox Cash Saver grocery store in Sand Springs. This was a rule that the owner of the store claimed was an ADA law. The store manager said that it was because people might put food in the seat part. Now, I don't know about you, but that part of the cart was originally meant for babies. (You know, the little ones with leaky diapers, slobbery little mouths, runny little noses caused by colds and other contagious illnesses?) Because that is just part of babyhood, I always look for the wet wipes at to clean up after the little people. There were none at the Cox Cash Saver in Sand Springs the day I went. But okay, some stores don't provide them. No problem. I always cover the seat with a pad and a blanket for my service dog anyway. Now, back to the ADA law that the store manager told me about. My dog has been my medical alert animal for about 9 of her 11 years and this was the first I had heard about that law, so I informed the woman that she could not tell me how I was supposed to USE my service dog. She persisted, so we left and went to an ADA- friendly grocery store in Sand Springs. Now I must admit that I don't read the ADA laws on a routine basis, so I figured that maybe I should review the laws. So, I went home and looked up the issue and found that, in fact, there was an ADA statement in the FAQ section of ada.gov that said this:
Q31: Are stores required to allow service animals to be placed in a shopping cart?
A: Generally, the dog must stay on the floor, or the person must carry the dog. For example, if a person with diabetes has a glucose alert dog, he may carry the dog in a chest pack so it can be close to his face to allow the dog to smell his breath to alert him of a change in glucose levels.
Now, when this question was originally written the answer began with the word "No". But after a grocery store was sued for not allowing a woman to transport her service animal in the seat of the shopping cart, the ADA revised the answer, removing the word "No". This left the statement rather evasive and subject to loose interpretation by uneducated store owners. It also put a kink in my ability to shop at the Cox Cash Saver grocery store in Sand Springs. It is obvious that the ADA needs to clarify that statement, so that people like me, who need to be more closer than the floor to their service animal. Until then, avoid Cox Cash Saver in Sand Springs if you have a service animal. They are not...

Read moreI love this place, I go here all the time to grocery shop. I will say however, I wish their produce was fresher but for the price it's understandable. This place is very affordable and definitely saves you money compared to going to a higher end place. They have a great selection of meat that you definitely can't find at Walmart or other stores, and their frozen meals are the same way that you can find things there you can't find other places and at a great price. I highly recommend this place for EBT and WIC shoppers as well because of the variety of things that are easily accessible through those programs there. It's much easier to operate at checkout and the staff is always very patient and...
