A local doctor, Jeffrey Rice, has a hobby of collecting FULL SCALE train cars and refurbishing them into mini restaurants, a railroad museum, a place for an overnight stay and more. He calls his growing collection "The Depot at Doolittle's" - an 1880's B&O replica rail depot.
My mom and I enjoyed our unique dining experience in the 50's style Diner Car (a renovated 1950's Pullman Standard passenger car). I had the Soft Shell Crab Po' Boy sandwich and she had the Lobster Bisque. Both were quite tasty.
Morgan, our waitress, shared some history about the car and graciously snapped a few photos of mom and I sitting in our seats.
For a more upscale meal, you might want to eat in the vintage, 1913 Parlor Car. Although we didn't eat in that car, we took a quick walk-through and marveled at the beautiful restoration of this antique marvel.
Two cars that caught my attention were the newly acquired Barnum and Bailey Circus cars sitting up on the hillside. When the circus closed down in early 2017, Dr. Rice jumped at the opportunity to add these cars to his collection. It will be interesting to see what he has in store for them.
Also on the grounds is Doolittle's Roadside Cafe. Judging by the number of people getting ice cream at the walk-up windows, I'd guess it must be pretty good. Unfortunately, I was too full from my meal that I didn't try the ice cream. I guess I'll save that for my next...
Read moreI am honestly pained to give this place a review like this.. I loved this place for the longest time. I have not been there for over a year and had missed it so I went with my girlfriend and her mother and we were all three very disappointed to say the least. It truly saddens me to say none of us will return. On the drive there we literally mentioned how large all the portions were and how cheap it all was and even went there over other places in the area. I was let down immediately by the new menu as it was quite meek in comparison to the old menu, the price threw me off secondly, I figured it would still be good old dr doolittles though and it absolutely was not. Very small portions on everything we got. When I went to get ice cream after eating I figured at the least the ice cream would still be worth it. I didn't even get to find out because they had only 3 flavors available, none of which I liked or wanted. Then I saw a gentleman get a LARGE chocolate twist cone since there was no vanilla and it was literally the size that the SMALL USED to be. Oh and my girlfriends mother got a hot fudge sundae, not sure what the fudge was but it looked like a half melted lump of chocolate and not fudge sauce at all. Again, I am very upset to even write this but it is an honest review of my experience and I will not be back. I went elsewhere...
Read moreGreat little place to stop, especially if you have kids. Decently priced. Friendly service. Friendly staff. Place needs some tlc. The mini golf is pretty dumpy but could easily be cleaned up. Maybe it's just early in the season, and it will be fixed up, idk. Its also badly marked and no directions on where to go after getting your putter and ball on where to go so most people walk all the way back up the hill through the parking lot not knowing to go to the left of the ice cream building and between the buildings. The dinosaurs are cool if you have younger kids. They put vr chairs in a weird place, and they are really bad. 1 of the 6 work, and they are really badly located and just bad looking. Overall though younger kids would definitely enjoy it, and it's worth the stop. 5$ a person to enter the dinosaurs and 4$ a person for mini golf. Spent 40$ at the depot, which I didn't think was bad. I had 3 ribs beans and potatoe salad. My wife had brisket applesauce and sweet potato fries. My daughter had chicken nuggets, applesauce, and a cookie. The ribs were dry, but everything else was good. The staff everywhere was friendly. Our waiter was great. Will be trying the pizza next time and or...
