Tortilla's inside a tortilla may not sound interesting or appetizing to most, but it's something that is enough to catch your eye when deciding on eating somewhere. I was turned onto the scent of this completely unassuming corner shop by some co-workers raving about their Breakfast burrito's, so I thought it behooving of me investigate.
If going North on Main you'll have access to the single entrance. If coming South you'll have to flip a u-turn to the immediate entrance.
Of the thousands of burrito's and within them many hundred of the breakfast burrito I have rarely if ever had one with rice, so that threw me off. Not that I minded, but it was good rice, but I distinctly tasted and olive which is rare for the Spanish style rice so it was a real surprise. Quilaquiles breakfast burrito. Think about that. I haven't had good chilaquiles in a long time so I tried it, extra sauce because no one likes dry fried tortilla's. Turns out the concept to me doesn't quite fulfill and I wasn't a fan. I couldn't quite balance the tortilla's with enough favor and acidity. The texture though was ingenious having crispy AND soft. I would have gone with a chicharonnes for the crisp and a mole for flavor or use a stronger salsa mixed with lemon. Their adobada isn't greasy and their carne asada is not that chunk style, this is had trimmed flank pieces the way they are mean to be cooked. Char marks are legit. I was impressed they had birria which is becoming more and more rare. I prefer Menudo when it's cold, but Birria when I'm hungover.
Their service is excellent, prices are good and the food is tasty authentic flavors and prep. Rice and beans are triple OG. They provide chips with your order, but not nearly enough salsa for the item and the chips. They could use a bigger salsa bar, but the décor is clean aside from the Tetris piece shaped design the drinks are cold (beer).
Ordering the breakfast burrito's is strange because rice and beans are not standard in most anywhere's burrito's and adding papas versus French fries, avocado instead of guacamole, cheese is confusing. Meat, egg, and cheese should be standard. Papa's an add on option, but avo is an interesting add on. The tortilla's are legit and take the abuse of a hefty little arm sized burrito. Didn't flake and crack.
It's a good Mexican restaurant, but needs work on polishing their dishes. It's the closest decently acceptable Mexican food for my breakfast and lunch needs. Parking lot is a...
Read moreI was excited to try since my sister had come here once before with her boyfriend & we wanted a Mexican breakfast but it was not good. The chips, salsa, and beans were good and that was free/included as we sat down and waited for our food. The water they give to drink is not good. I ordered nuevo ranchos over easy but they were hard and fully cooked. They topped it with onions, tomato, and WAY TOO much Serrano peppers. Could not eat because too spicy & not even seasoned. It also came with a side of rice & beans. Rice was good (could be a little more flavorful). The Beans were GROSS. They tasted like they were almost going BAD! They tasted a little sour too me. Could not believe they would serve that. I have a good strong tasting tongue so I recognize that taste. I knew the food was bad when my sister couldn't finish her chilaquiles. She said some parts were too fried/burnt & she couldn't even really eat it because the green salsa was too spicy!! Beans also bad. We definitely should of complained because I could not believe we paid $48 for just those 2 plates we could of made at home even better! I can cook better than that & my mom. Maybe it was a bad day but serving things that are almost expired and being to heavy handed on the chile while making salsa is so bad. Can't even enjoy the food! Service was nice but I'm sure they guy could tell i was upset & could of told me again if something was wrong. Learn from me, if it's bad, tell them to remake or...
Read moreFood 2 stars, service gives it a full star as the server couldn’t have been friendlier. He brought us chips and salsa (both spicy - the green salsa has habaneros in it) while we waited and even provided a drink refill.
Tacos - $6 per carne asada taco seems steep. The tacos were large & served with onion & cilantro on a homemade tortilla. Just average.
Quesadilla - my son wanted a cheese quesadilla so that’s what we ordered. Instead, we received a chicken quesadilla which he wouldn’t eat. I can only comment on the portion size which was plentiful.
Chicken enchiladas - $23 served with green sauce, Mexican rice and beans. Beans were decent and topped w Cotija cheese. Enchiladas themselves were just ok, nothing remarkable about them.
Camarones a la diabla - for $29 I expected more than 6 shrimp. Served with hard, dried, plain white rice. The beans were ok but the shrimp were tough and rubbery, a sign of being over cooked. Also, I must note that I love love love spicy food. The spice level on this dish was a 10 on a scale of 1-10. Nose running, eyes watering, tongue tingling. Almost unbearable. The dish was served with 3 homemade tortillas which were the best part of the meal.
All in all, great service for mediocre Mexican food. They’ve been around since 1992 (according to their wall) and are remodeling their main entrance. Probably a quick option if you work in the area but not worth driving out of...
