A very underwhelming gym for the price ( which they keep increasing ALL THE TIME, over $500 increase in 1 year with literally NO significant changes to the gym)
The good: sauna and steam room is a nice luxury to have. Not many gyms in the Bay Area have this.
if you value pickleball /swimming pool then you will like the facilities for this, they are big !
-multiple power racks for weight lifting. You don’t have your standard 2 racks that most gyms have so you can typically find one open in the morning.
free coffee in the mornings is a nice perk! Great way to start the day after a workout
The bad : Gym Equipment: you get very standard and outdated weight lifting equipment for the price you pay. You will get your standard bench press, dumbbells, a couple of traditional machines and that’s it. No new modern machines that you see on YouTube now in days. all of the equipment is very underwhelming for a gym of this price. You will find MORE machines at a city sport for 80% of the price. It does not make sense.
the buildings: the gym is divided into 2 major buildings. The area with the dumbbells and smith machine is very well lit, has windows, is clean, and just feels like a premium gym. The other building is old, shitty carpet, bad paint, and is where they basically threw all their shitty machines in. Since they separate half of the lifting machines this way, you have to cross from one building to another for some workouts which basically limits your ability to do power sets. Again, for the price this is very underwhelming
the hours: they open at 6 on weekdays and 8 on weekends. If you are someone that likes to workout early and make it to work on time, these hours are terrible.
-use of space: this will be highly biased and subjective b/c I don’t have kids but there’s a huge playground area that never gets used. I don’t know why they don’t use this space for fitness.
-staff don’t greet you, they seem unhappy to be there.
Overall I don’t see this worth the price for what it offers. Price increases without any significant changes to the gym leave a very bad taste in your mouth. They keep saying “exciting new projects” and literally see nothing significant to address these issues (other people in the reviews have stated the similar feedback for...
Read moreThis place is nothing remotely like when it was called decathlon club. It is now all the expenses and none of the benefits once existed. That bar and TVs that gave the entrance a look and some excitement are gone. Indoor stream of water and rocks and trees around it are gone, instead there is one picture of it on the wall showing what it used to be, like customers pay to get into a museum and see how great it used to be!
Soap and shampoo are bought in bulk and look cheaper than in any average normal gym. To me the smell of shampoos identifies with insect repellents. Even under the urinals is always wet. They do not even spend money getting enough cleaning persons to take care of that. I remember a time when they cleaned and dried that place continuously.
I had the monthly plan. When I went to the office and gave them 1 month notice they asked me to fill the separation form online! They also asked me after separation was approved [as if I need their approval] they send me another email to sign. When that email arrived it literally has an "addendum" that I have agree to pay for 2 more months. Well, no, I do not agree to any addendum (literally their own phrase) when I am cancelling my plan!
When I tried to get a hold of any sales people or manager or even managers of other Bay Clubs and left messages, nobody answered for 5 days, playing the delay game. I decided to let my bank know, I had let the 1st month notice payment go through, I blocked the 2nd. It went through anyways, and I eventually recovered it. The shameless people are still sending me mails asking for money as if they are completely oblivious of their own behavior!
Go to any other gym. No other gym has anything less than Bay club has now. They do not spend any of all those membership money to reach even the level of service of an average Bay area gym. If you have not found a better gym yet, you really have not been...
Read moreBayclub Santa Clara is a pretty gym and in a convenient location. Unfortunately, the pros end there.
Pros Amenities Convenient Location
Cons Membership Fees Lack of equipment Non Ergonomical equipment placement
Bayclub is made to look pretty but not to excersise.
There is a severe shortage of equipment. I have seen people get their own weight lifting belts, pull up and dip chain, ab wheel rollout, micro plates etc. For a gym that charges this much these equipment MUST be available and not rely on patrons getting their own equipment.
Lack of pull up options. Again the pull up station is just pretty. If you need to use the pull up station you need another equipment to reach to the top, which 95% of the US population would need. Pull up bars on squat racks are unusable when bars are placed.
Squatting and deadlift options. Again they have 4 squat options which is both for sqaut and deadlift. This means that lot of times people deadlift on the blue walkway. (I don't blame them). When you have equipment that is made for looking good and not functional people use whatever they can.
Seperation of equipments. My god the gym separates equipment in separate rooms. Guess someone wanted a view of the pools while running. Due to this folks have to walk across the gym to use equipment. You CANNOT super set with this. Well atleast walking across the gym multiple times increases my step count.
Suggestions on improvement Get more equipment especially weightlifting belts, micro plates, pull up belt etc
Harmozine the equipment. Stop seperating them across the gym. Either move the cardio equipment to other side or move the gym equipment to one side. That way folks don't have to going back and forth across the gym
Better pull up stations or just get a continuous squat rack which will increase the number of squat and deadlift positions and also have pull-ups...
