To give the perspective it is small Indo- Chinese place as they claim. There are 5-6 tables . There was one man who was receptionist , server and assisting with the food food prep to the place as had one chef only as claimed by them . Seeing that we were quite patient with the server taking his time to either greet or even get started with just water .
After an 20 minutes of wait we were finally provided with the water and Menu . By the time we were decided and the order was noted by our server it was close to 45 minutes. Please note the fact here that we mentioned twice that everything in our order was vegetarian and server confirmed he understood it right . We were still patient and compasionate about just one person trying to assist every thing .
In our wait for food to arrive , we observed that they forgot to charge one of the customers and they arrived back and then that one person ran with brief relief of recovering charges . Meanwhile of out wait time it's worth to notate that there is only one other table besides us which was occupied and could typically be considered not so busy time . Furthermore during our wait we observed that same person from GrubHub came in twice to pick up food for the customer and with even with second visit the individual waited for roughly 15 minutes to finally pick the food and leave .
Finally after some wait we had our appetizer served which was just ok , but the hunger during the wait time increased so much that we hogged on while we were still waiting for soup to be served . After the appetizer we were still waiting in hope of soup that we odered . No soup for next 20 minutes. After the interval one person server of the restaurant shows up with the entree's . We were surprised to see them since the soup was still pending . We odered Paneer and American Choupsey for the entree. The choupsey came without the fried noodles which it is generally served with . On Reminding him about the soup and the fried noodles he comes up with soup in 30 seconds forgetting fried noodles again . On Reminding he brings up while the entree which is generally served and eaten hot gets colder. While server finally got us fried noodles. we start having the soup only to find the soup which was promised to be made out of the vegetable broth was then found to have Chicken .
We signaled the server to come to us . We confirmed that there was chicken in soup . We look at him and he said but it is halal . We were like we specified we were vegetarian and we do not eat meat , halal or not . After saying sorry he jus leaves . Meanwhile my spouse starts coughing bad as he was disgusted to the fact that he ate something he was not supposed to . Seeing that he said he can give us 15% discount and we were like WHAAAAAT . We are not doing this for discount or anything . Finally he felt guilty enough to not charge us anything . We also gave him back our barely started entree's and left after almost wasting 2...
Read moreI really hate to do this, and really wanted this to be great.
The service was awful, from calling in the order, calling back for add ons, the service was very rude, emotionless and seemingly uninterested in even receiving business. I don’t believe it was an owner, just an employee - but something an owner should really look into more. Really came across as a “I know our establishment isn’t good, but not my problem I just work here” type service.
But hey - we all know of some hole in the wall joint that is notorious for bad service but we all come back for incredible food. This is what I wanted to believe I was about to experience, but I was left incredibly dissatisfied. No one in my family could stomach their plate after the first few bites. Even after a day of fasting. We all wished we just got Inchin’s or drove further for decent halal Chinese (in fairness, something Chicago is lacking in general).
We got sesame chicken, combo fried rice, mongolian beef, some noodle dish and all of it was tasteless. The proteins were physically tough, dishes didn’t even look to be the right color, it all tasted like eating the cheapest meats and ingredients that were cooked under a heat lamp for a week. Granted - we didn’t expect the most amazing food but this was inedible.
The only silver lining was that one more day of Ramadan was decided later that evening for the opportunity to redeem our last Iftar. Many people don’t say this, but thank you Chicago hilal - for that opportunity. I made a lot of istighfar that night for wasting food, but more so for treating my own body with such low quality food. We all should have a higher bar. The other reviews don’t lie - I too wanted to believe.
Atmosphere is a 2-star. There was a fish tank. It gave a classic Chinese takeout vibe - the type you roll the dice for seeing if it’s actually good. But in this game, be advised, you’ll lose.
Respectfully, this place must have once been good and a staple in the community. I hope the owners can get it back into shape and I wish it much success - but this was a last...
Read moreMy family have been looking for good halal Chinese food in the area for awhile. We are pretty strict in only eating zabiha halal so this restaurant showed up when we did our research. It claimed to have halal indo- chinese food. So we called the restaurant and the man on the phone claimed that they serve halal meat. When asked where exactly they get their meat from, he claimed 'My Halal Meat' on golf road. Knowing that the butcher shop 'My Halal Meat' is a HFSAA verified halal meat butcher, we were really happy to have finally found a truly zabiha halal indo Chinese place to eat. However , there was still some doubt in our mind. So we actually called 'My Halal Meat' and the owner of the butcher shop said the following: We DO NOT supply our meat to Hakkah Wok. You are NOT the first customer of ours who came to confirm this after Hakkah Wok used our name
Clearly Hakkah Wok is not open and honest. They may still be offering Halal but they are clearly not certified in any way. However, if they are lying to us customers then they have truly lost our business because we cannot trust them or other food now.
I will be spreading the word in my network of how this business has been deceiving those who are just looking to get pure halal food....
