We have been to Woodchucks maybe 3-4 times since they opened and tried Retro Dough for the first time recently. We were excited about this type of restaurant in town and wanted to give a local restaurant business, but each time we have been to Woodchucks, and now to Retro Dough, we have had a poor experience in some way or another.
At Woodchucks, we like the overall atmosphere and we enjoyed playing darts during one visit. They have a variety of menu options. I especially like their fries and my husband loves the burgers. We also appreciate their support of first responders, the military, and educators, but thatâs about where our satisfaction ends. On each visit, service has been less than ideal. We have either had to wait longer than expected for someone to actually come to our table to greet us and take our order or once our food & drink orders were placed, it took an unreasonably long amount of time to deliver. On one visit with few customers in the restaurant, we noticed customers arriving after we did receive their drinks & food sooner than we did and our app going to another table. On all of our in-person visits, we come during an âoffâ time when itâs less busy, so we never understand why service isnât better or why the timing canât be improved. Once when we tried to place an order for pickup (it was later in the evening), we were told they were too busy and couldnât handle taking our order.
We were looking forward to finally trying Retro Dough b/c my husband loves pizza. We visited for the first time on a Saturday afternoon and the place was completely empty when we entered that we thought they were closed. We did not see a single employee in sight, and after waiting patiently at the counter for a couple of minutes, I walked to the back & through to the Woodchucks side and also saw no employee in sight. There was no greeter/hostess at the door or bartender at the bar; I only saw customers throwing axes or sitting at the bar. As I walked back toward the RD side, I finally saw an employee socializing and asked her if there was anyone working the pizza side. She said yes and from there, our experience did not get any better.
She took our orders and we waited at the table for 15 minutes for her to bring us water; again, there was no one else in the restaurant (and for the entire time we were there). We loved the decor, but for a place that is trying to be nostalgic & a throwback to the 80s, we were so surprised how dead this place seemed. The adult slush machine, popcorn machine, pretzel maker, and pizza slice machine were all either not working or turned off; maybe they are only used at a certain time. A lot of the arcade games were out of order, and when we found one we wanted to play, we needed change, but the change maker was also out of order.
Our app & one entree arrived a few minutes later; we were told my husbandâs stromboli would take a longer time. Eventually, there were no employees on the RD side, and we noticed that my husbandâs stromboli was done but sitting under the heat lamp. A few more minutes later, the employee brought the stromboli to out table, but it was not what he expected in a stromboli. The size was appropriate but the dough was very thin and even though he requested twice the amount of cheese, it almost had no cheese; there were mushrooms in it that he did not request. He did, however, think the red sauce had a good flavor. The app had no flavor at all but I loved the fries with my entree. The cost was a little on the high end for us but we donât mind paying more for quality food, which unfortunately, for a pizza place, this is not it.
We generally like to dine out during slower times and earlier in the day, so we were so hopeful for this concept to be a go-to place for us in Senatobia, but maybe this isn't the place for us. Downtown Senatobia needs an establishment like this, but sadly, we've been disappointed...
Read moreLet me start off by saying, Nice concept. That being said, If you show up thinking you are just going to walk in off the street & get a lane to throw axes you will sorely mistaken! You must reserve your lanes... Was told it was $25 a person for the hour. & all lanes had been booked even though they 5 of them had no one on them for the entire 45 minutes we were there.
2nd the food was mid at best... everyone in my group LOVES French fries.... None of us could eat them here... they were to "dry". Burgers had to have been precooked because for that thickness to have came out the kitchen that fast was unbelievable... They had absolutely no flavor. The bun on the other hand was really good.
Only way I would ever come back is with reservations to throw axes, & then order food while doing that... Food was not good enough to...
Read moreThis place has a lot of good fun going on in terms of vibes and activities. The servers were super kind and attentive when they were there but otherwise service was so shockingly slow. It took ten minutes for us to get water. I don't think its from lazy waitstaff at all because they were always moving but I don't know what it is. Staffing, or inefficiency? Felt like whoevers in charge might not know how to keep service quick. The burgers are really tasty and the pizza was just fine. The wings were good too, Im looking forward to trying other foods and will come back with friends.
The axe throwing is just way too expensive! Everyone is very friendly and good...
