Ate lunch here today for the first time in a decade and was pleasantly surprised with how improved the food & atmosphere is with the new ownership. The shakes were reminiscent of old ice cream shops: my mixed berry gramma shake was deliciously thick & creamy-a truly delightful dairy dessert.
While I absolutely will be returning for more milk shakes, it’s the burgers & onion rings, that are the stars of the show. These burgers are thick, juicy and oh so flavorful. They were so good it made me regret my decades old gastric bypass because my heart and mouth wanted “just two more bites.”
The bar & surrounding outdoor eating area have an “instagramable” atmosphere to it. It had most every offering that bigger restaurants have. Its laid back vibe felt like a Hawaiian tiki bar, swapping out palm trees for Shaver’s giant evergreen trees. If I weren’t driving later, I absolutely would have sampled some of the drinks that I saw on the menu. The blended drinks looked especially delicious! Fortunately, a berry shake filled the void.
While I wasn’t a bar patron, I did get to talk to the owner manning the bar when he stepped out to help my disabled mom park her giant camper van. As we exchanged pleasantries as my mom navigated their compact and PACKED parking lot*, I got the impression that the owner/bartender has the sort of kindness and good that we need in the world. Since he took over 5 years ago, it’s clear that he’s poured his heart and soul into creating a space that everyone can come to relax & eat.
*Mr owner sir-if you’re reading this, thank you for stepping out & helping my very frazzled mom park. Your calm demeanor and helpful suggestions diffused a very stressful moment. My mom has only used her boat of a camper van a handful of times and your suggestions on where she could safely park helped to counterbalance the harsh words of the people who didn’t care that my mom was really trying her best to get out of everyone’s way. She is disabled & newly widowed. It takes everything she has to gradually rejoin society. Trying to parallel park the 24’ van in cramped quarters with rude people yelling at her was our nightmare. Your calm words and helpful directions helped to quiet the anxious doubt. You soothed her nerves gave her the confidence to deftly park her vehicle.
**parking is at a premium alongside Shaver’s busy stretch of highway, with large areas blocked off for cabin rentals (especially on the weekends). It’s out of Hungry Hut’s control and with patience an empty spot will open...
Read moreStaff was extremely rude to my family and refused to correct a mistake with a tip, effectively robbing them. We've made several attempts to contact the owner with no response and more vitriol from staff.
I ordered the hot dog. Bland, tasteless fare.
Perhaps it has just been a bad week for them. Don't know...but after a calm, nice family weekend together at Shaver, it wasn't a great note to end on.
Addendum: Owner's response is blatantly false. We have not been contacted. We've contacted YOU, twice.
Your staff explained absolutely nothing and did not direct us to any signs about signing or any such matter. While waiting for our food, my family member noticed the mistake and went to the counter to speak with your employee. She was rude and at first sarcastically asked to take down my family member's name and number, and then misspelled it. When corrected, she threw the paper at my family member and stormed off. Another employee gave us her name, as she was just as shocked by her behavior as we were. Since we paid for the food, we ate it.
That gave me the impression that either you don't have any skill in choosing employees with character, or at the very least she was upset she had to work on a busy Sunday afternoon. Regardless, it was unacceptable.
Instead of responding to a customer with concern and decency, you've lied blatantly and completely. Shame on you.
P.S. the hot dog was bland. I get to decide about that, just in case you forgot how...
Read moreThis is the BEST place to grab a delicious bite in Shaver Lake! Perfect as you're coming down from China Peak. I've tried just about everything on the menu, and it's all tasty and generously-sized. Burgers, fries, shakes, chicken sandwiches, non-meat sandwich, etc. It's not cheap, but it's all good quality. The burgers are solid: well-sized, with all the fresh trimmings. The grilled chicken sandwich is also very good. The fries come in a pretty big bag, and they have a yummy condiment that makes them even better. We always order the onion rings. I have to note that everyone that works there makes an effort to be very polite and customer-oriented. It's apparent, and they all deserve kudos for it. Once we had a delay in our order, and the lady in charge was super nice about it, corrected the error, and made things right. The food takes longer than a chain fast-food, but it's worth the wait. I think this will become your favorite spot in Shaver Lake as well. One small drawback: if it's wet/snowy you'll have to eat in the car, as the place is quite limited inside. After all,...
