My wife and I went to the Black Pig before a concert across the street. My wife ordered a seafood bouillabaisse and I ordered duck fries and two tacos. the seafood plate definitely looked quite good (in my wife's eyes). My wife started eating once she received her plate. I was told that mine was coming soon. A few minutes later mu duck fries and two carnita tacos arrived. They were very, very plain. There was a very thin spread of salsa on the bottom of the small tortilla along with very small amount of greens. The meat was placed next along with four small, cubed pieces of tomato. I had asked for the avocado lime sauce on the side. Nonetheless, the tacos were very basic and boring. For six dollars a piece one would expect some type of creative salsa or a nice cheese blend. There was none of that. I am not saying that they were bad by any means, just not worth six dollars a piece.
Now the duck fries were very interesting as well. French fries cooked in duck fat with a forkful of shredded duck put atop. These were also pricey, but strangely enough, there were a large amount of them and I found myself eating a lot of them. I am not sure if the reason was because I really liked them or that they were better than anything else on the table.
My wife really enjoyed her bouillabaisse, until she tried a piece of the fish. She did not care for it at all. As wife's have a tendency to do, she put all of the fish on my plate (she was hoping I would really enjoy something while we were out for dinner). I put a piece in my mouth and would you believe that two bones immediately hit the roof of my mouth. I was able to pull them out with my fingers. It appeared that I was not having a very successful dinner. I then took a different piece of fish and put that into my mouth. More bones! This time they were smaller and my only option was to spit my food out onto the plate. We explained to the waitress that there were many bones in the fish and she said that she would mention that to the chef.
My wife once again wanted me to have a nice dinner with her and decided we needed to have a dessert. She ordered the pound cake. The waitress pointed out how wonderful it looked as she put it on our table. One taste and it was clear; even the dessert was not even close to what was expected. The pound cake tasted aweful and all of the whipped cream and additions could not make it be what it should.
The long and the short of it was we had a bill of $77 dollars. Life is about the experience, but my money today would have been better spent...
Read moreMy sister and I visited on 11/26 Saturday evening around 8pm. I called ahead to ensure they would still be serving food at that time. The bartender was attentive and provided excellent customer service. We shared the mushroom toast, mussels, and the prime rib sandwich.
The mushroom toast was delicious and presented nicely. The mussels had an off-odor which we immediately noticed and were uneasy about. We did not want to send it back to the kitchen because we were still waiting on the sandwich to be prepared and did not want to anger the cook before we had received all that we ordered. We only ate 3 of the (10-12?) mussels and agreed that something did not taste right; I also noticed that not all of the mussels served were fully opened (undercooked and tasted/smelled improperly cleaned). We hoped with the good reputation of the establishment, we would make it out unscathed if we did not consume any more mussels.
The steak sandwich was delicious, as were the cocktails and dessert. Overall we had a great experience thanks to the awesome bartender.
Fast forward to 4am Sunday, I became violently ill (frequent vomiting, cold sweats, painful stomach cramping) which continued all day. My sister also experienced some gastro upset and by 8am she was also very ill. There is no doubt that the mussels were the culprit of food borne illness, as this meal was the only foods she and I had commonly consumed in the last week.
Hopefully the kitchen staff working last night will receive training on proper handling and preparation of shellfish. If we were this sick from only consuming a fraction of the serving, consuming all of them would certainly land someone in the hospital. This food poisoning experience was extremely traumatic and 24 hours later I am still very sick. I don't think I will ever eat mussels or Black...
Read moreThe place looked promising and the online pictures looked good. When we got there we were greeted and although the place was almost empty....like 3.30 on a Saturday afternoon we were taked to the very back farthest corner of the restaurant behind a glass wall....my wife and I had our 1 and a half year old with us...but he is very good child....maybe that's why but I don't know...like people don't have children with them...besides the place was almost empty. We ordered drinks which were good...and then food....our waitress, "D" for short, was ok but kept saying weird snarky things to me....example: I asked about the soup....it was a gumbo soup with shrimp....I said oh ok, well I don't like shrimp, and she says....well you can't please everyone in a flippant way....another time was when we were done eating she came to take away my plate which was empty and she says, "should I tell the chef you hated the food"...maybe she thought she was funny but I didn't see the humor in it. The truffle fries we ordered were very good. My BBQ sandwich was okay...need more flavor....I had greens with it and they were very basic. My wife had BBQ Mac and cheese...again it was ok...but at 20.00 a bowl....yes 20.00 for Mac and cheese...it was seriously lacking. In fact about 8 or so things on the menu was a Mac n cheese dish....in the 20.00 range so yeah.... Probably no going to eat here again...its too expensive for what you get and when I go out somewhere and drop 80.00 on food and drinks , I don't want to be treated in a condescending way from a waitress. Perhaps you will have a different experience...I hope you do. Thanks...
