My wife and I were on our way to my sister-in-law's house in KY recently and we stopped here for dinner. Didn't know what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised!
First, we were greeted by a very nice host, who sat us very quickly. In no time, our server showed up, Suz. One of the best servers I've ever had at a restaurant. Friendly, down to Earth, knew the menu inside and out, and was very quick on bringing our drinks and refilling our drinks without us even having to ask. We don't drink much alcohol, so we just stuck with soda. Another point for our server: didn't harass us on upselling anything. He genuinely seemed to want us to have a good experience.
My wife got a combination plate, choosing a taco and tostada. She said it was good.
I wanted the "Burrito California", but it was odd to me, because it didn't list fries as an ingredient. So I asked the server about it. He said in TN, California Burritos don't have fries. That this is the way it is at all Mexican joints around here. Very bizarre to me, but as I was thinking about what to do, the server enthusiastically told us that the cook could put fries in it. So I went ahead and did that! Even then, the burrito was not a San Diego style "California Burrito", but what I had was delicious and filled me up. I love learning about food differences among US regions, and this quirk about California Burritos in TN is something I will never forget. LOL
Anyways, the food came pretty quickly (~10 minutes after the order went in) and again was very good. Chips and Salsa was also good too (which came when we were seated, which I forgot to mention).
Restaurant and dining area was clean.
Finally, when we were done, our server didn't rush us out or anything. Was very clear that there was no hurry, we could take our time, etc. I really appreciate that. We had been on the road for a few days at that point, we didn't come to this restaurant for a short order diner experience. We came to try Mexican Food in TN, which BTW, is surprisingly good!
Pricing wasn't bad, my wife and I were both at under $20 per person, before tax.
All in all, a great experience. Would highly recommend this place if you find yourself in Shelbyville. I don't know if we will find ourselves in this city again, but if we do, definitely coming back to this restaurant and, frankly, we'd ask for Suz by name. My wife and I are HUGE on customer service and have been known to ask for servers at restaurants. Suz just made our list! Thanks everyone at...
Read moreMy wife and I came in today Wednesday June 19, 2024. We were immediately seated and served chips with and two bowls of red salsa, one spicy and one not. The chips and salsa tasted fresh and we asked if they also had the green Verde salsa. The waiter took our drink orders and in just a brief moment or two he was back with the Verde salsa and drinks. We both ordered the Chile relleno stuffed with chicken which included a chicken taco, guacamole salad and refried beans (pinto we believe). Everything was good but the guacamole was delicious. The portions were huge for a lunch special and more than either of us could finish. Decor was very nice throughout the establishment and the music was authentic and of perfect volume, not too loud to carry on a conversation across the table and not so soft that didn't bring in a nice ambience. I will note that the only utensil was a fork and I love to dip the hot salsa into my refried beans and I will ask for one next time. It was a nice experience and not crowded so go...
Read moreI ordered three beef enchiladas, one cheese taco, some refried beans and some cheese dipping sauce ($3.50 for the dipping sauce alone!) and my total was $24! Of course they hand you a tiny amount of cheese dip so I asked for me and my son a refill. You know the lady that owned it was waiting on us and charged us $7 for cheese dip!!! I only had a $20 on me because I had added everything up and it came to $19 and some change. So, when I go to pay and see the $24 I am stunned. So I ask politely had a word with the woman, who never informed me when I asked for a refill it would be an extra $3.50, explaining to her I would have Never ordered a refill if she intended to charge me $7 for 2 tiny bowels of cheese and the woman (obviously filled with greed) wouldn't let up. No Way to treat your customers!! Will stick to El Mexico like...
