This was my first visit (Apr 13)…but absolutely not my last! A coworker recommended this place when I asked about a “good chicken fried steak.” I’m so thankful my family and I chose to go here. This, overall, was one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. The restaurant is conveniently located. There’s plenty of parking space. The outside was neat, clean and appealing (good spots for taking pics). There’s outside dining space as well. Upon entry, we were greeted warmly and there were no off-putting smells (if a place doesn’t smell right, I can’t eat there. Period.). The environment was clean, cozy and cared for. We were seated in a large booth that was clean! I was able to slide into the booth—both booth and table were clean: no stickiness, no crumbs, no wetness no nothing but booth and table…and did I say, CLEAN!? :-) Ketchup bottle on the table—clean! SOON after being seated, we were greeted by our waiter, JESSE, and he was a stand-out from the get-go. He was polite, charming, kind, gracious, knowledgeable, down-to-earth, comical and ready to serve. He served us as if he owned the place—truly vested and invested—and as if we were the only people in the building. He made it all about us and made sure we were delighted with our full experience. He “WAITED” on us in full-service fashion and he was a joy. He didn’t bug nor bother, he didn’t huff nor puff (lol) he was genuinely glad to be in this space and we were so glad he was, too. Thank you, Jesse!!! Sooo, I don’t get the chicken fried steak. My mom did. She got the smaller sized portion, and it was still a big portion. It was good (I tasted it) and she enjoyed it. My husband went with the pot roast. It was succulent, tender and full of vegetables. The mashed potatoes were real and the brown gravy topped it all off. Since I was in a new place, I went out on a limb and tried something new. The Bacon Bleu Burger was sooooo good and my sweet potato fries were natural cut and cooked to perfection. The ranch dressing I requested for dipping was thick and homemade…turns out, it’s a “bacon ranch.” Not much room left for dessert, but we did it anyway…fudge chocolate cake and creamy cheesecake. Totally delectable. I was so overwhelmed by the sheer number of sumptuous choices on the menu, that it was hard to decide. Jesse was helpful and patient. When I go back I’m pretty sure I will have to try something from the breakfast menu. You can get breakfast, lunch or dinner any time of the day, 6am-10pm. My Black Bear experience was so FULL and RICH, and so was I. I was a content bear. lol. Everything was great, start to finish. Every employee that I made eye contact with had a smile for me…almost knowingly, as if they could see and appreciate my glee and confidently respond with smile like “Yeah girl, we know…we know.” Hahahaa. I loved it all. Can’t wait to go back. I had to hug Jesse as we said our good-byes. I made a new friend…and I have a new favorite place to dine. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Ebony did a stellar job taking care of us this morning, as we enjoyed the Bear’s Choice Breakfast on our way up to our farm for a day filled with manual labor. Ebony is not only a great server, she’s quite the “bear”ista too, as she prepares THE BEST hidden menu Sweet Cream Hazelnut Iced Coffee in Shenandoah. She’s bubbly, quick, and fun, leaving her clients satisfied with their choice to stop by the Black Bear Diner. She does a good job managing multiple tables, while making all her guests feel special. We can’t wait to see her the next time we stop in, while knowing that we likely will be pleased as punch with any of the staff members, as they take pride in their food, service, and facilities. The only downside to our experience was being sat adjacent to the bathrooms, but it was a quiet area and we had easy access to the facilities. I was surprised that there wasn’t better teamwork by other BBD staff, as Ebony happily invited guests into the restaurant, took guests food orders, helped a colleague take on a 10 top, delivered food & drink, followed up on guest needs, bussed tables, dropped the check, and helped encourage reviews on google to get feedback on the guest experience. This was all accomplished with no additional support by other servers, which was surprising. Ebony managed it all well, all with a smile while promoting BBD merchandise. It was all I could do not to leave with a BBD backpack/drawstring bag & dog bandana. Come enjoy some hearty portions and delicious food with a touch of personalized service which will leave you one happy camper (with a full tummy at a great value), and looking forward to your next black bear diner experience.

We visited on Saturday, May 3rd, around 7pm. The service was horrible! We got greeted by a (not being racial) african american waitress with a very rude " Someone's helped you yet?". It was at that moment that I knew the service wasn't going to be good. She set us down and left. She then came back about 5 min. later (which was not long at all) and gave us the menu and, in a very short and rude manner, asked us, "What would you like to drink?". Since we didn't really had time to look at the menues yet, she noticed that we didn't really know what we wanted so she then told us " ok, I'm going to give yall a few minutes and I'll come back to take yalls order". Which was totally fine, but it was just the bad attitude that ruined the whole visit. I do have to say thank you because she brought us a giant pancake as an apology for the long wait. That kind of lifted our spirits, but it still didn’t make up for the short and rude attitude. I myself have never worked in the food industry so I can imagine that it can be very frustrating sometimes but it's your job and no matter what, you have to do it well with a good attitude no matter how bad is going for you. If you're going to have a bad attitude, you might as well just talk to your manager and ask for the rest of the day off. It was not a good experience!

The start was ok, new training waitress was fine. However, after two cups of coffee it took about thirty minutes to get the food. The restaurant was fairly empty, except for a table for six or eight, thus not busy. What arrived at the table was nothing short of a disaster. Burned… and raw hash browns that were hastily cooked and inedible. Only thing good were the scrambled eggs. In hindsight, I could have had this breakfast at the hotel and it been a far better experience. The manager offered twice to redo the order but after taking thirty minutes of my time, I’d be late for an engagement at 8am, so I politely declined. At that point, I lost faith in their ability to deliver. My order wasn’t even complicated. When it was delivered the waitress even knew it was wrong to drop that garbage in front of me… could not even make eye contact and hurried away. I ate what I could, left a tip. I was charged full price. I’ve eaten at Black Bear Diner across the country, many times, and this negative experience was my first… hopefully my last. I don’t want my money back or an apology… just want them to fix their location. It needs serious attention. This was absolutely unacceptable, disgraceful.

Update!! It's just always FANTASTIC!! Second time!!! Lucas is gone, but we LOVED our new server, Aeriona! Third time! We're hooked!! My new fave!! Vegetarian omelet! Fourth time!!! Aeriona is still here!!! She is the server to ask for!!! She was such a pleasure! So nice, so efficient, perfect manners, great personality, and just plain DARLING!!! The food was delicious, yet again! The atmosphere was pleasant. We we're acknowledged by all the staff that we saw. We used to go to Cracker Barrel until they goofed up bad yesterday. Black Bear is just as far away, so we are going south on 45 instead of north now! Leaving "Cracker" Barrel in the DUST!! The portions and quality of the food makes BB Diner a much better place overall compared to Cracker Barrel. Here was my first review ten months prior... On my way to catch a flight, I treated my friend/ride to breakfast here. She is now a BBD usual!! We were sat quickly and our server was right there within seconds!! We told him we were in a hurry and he caught right on! Our drinks were brought right out and our meals soon followed. Best part of all was that it was DELICIOUS!!! Thank you Lucus!! You are a fantastic server!!

Update visit Sept 2021 -Went on a Sunday for breakfast. They were extremely busy so since I was dining alone sat at the bar. Took quite a long time for anyone behind the bar to acknowledge me but understandable as they were short-handed. Ordered the Big Bear Breakfast Platter. Eggs, biscuit & gravy along with a side of hash browns and coffee. Eggs were cooked perfectly, biscuits were huge but a bit on the dry side, gravy was tasty , sausages were huge. I was so full b4 finishing that never even got to the hash browns but took them home with my leftovers & can say they were good heated up next morning. Had coffee & it was ok. Very large portions! My server could of been a bit more attentive but I was not upset as I said they were all slammed. Very good meal for a great price. 2019 - Nice place, very cute deco. Ordered salad for meal, was HUGE and tasted ok but lettuce was not as fresh as I like it. Tried the chocolate cake and it was a large portion as well, enough to share. Waiter was very attentive and very good service. Will return to try out their breakfast as I have heard it's great.
