The door swings and out of it rushes the smell of proofed dough baking into crisp crust . Those in the know are instantly transported - you seem to hear the clackety roar of a distant subway , the sibilant hissing of a bus suspension ,the low murmur of jostling bodies packed onto busy sidewalks , a medley constantly bleeting horns ; the panoply of urban sounds that is the heartbeat of a busy city .
But this is not the West Village , you’re not on Bleecker Street , this is Simpsonville and you’re at The Slice. You can be forgiven for thinking for just a moment you are in New York City , because that smell , oh that smell!
Parking was a bit tough , there is a big lot , but this place is popular . We got there at 11:40 ( 10 minutes after opening) and were lucky to get squeezed into the last two top available.
The vibe is groovy , from the time you approach the place , til you step inside , greeted by the display case of window pizzas . The people are warm and friendly , but this place is bustling . There is a rooftop dining area that looks like it’d be fun on a day when it’s not 95 degrees .
We started off with meatballs and ricotta . They were excellent. A lot of places over season the meatballs to compensate for poor ingredients, not so here . The meatballs had the perfect taste and texture .
My wife had the 5 wings and House salad lunch special . The salad was fresh , with great ingredients and the dressing seemed to be homemade . She raved about the wings . She ordered mild , and said they were appropriately hot , not wimpy , but not atomic , “ perfect “ was her word .
I ordered a large pepperoni pizza - don’t judge me , I like to have leftovers . The 18” pizza was served piping hot , and surprisingly quickly . I ordered it “crispy” but not “well done” and that’s exactly how it came out .
New York style pizza is all about balance- every flavor of the pizza working together in harmony , with no aspect overpowering the other . Honestly , I often forget how good New York style pizza is because there are so many places that advertise New York style pizza that are serving a poor imitation.
That’s not the case here. This pizza is legit . The tanginess of the slightly acidic , chunky sauce perfectly complements the zing of the cup and char pepperoni and the slightly salty smoothness of the low-moisture, high quality mozzarella. I didn’t ask what cheese they use but wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Grande . The fermented crust is perfect , crisp but chewy with an undercarriage to die for and no flop or grease .
The Slice definitely goes directly to the top of our list , everything about this place is top notch , and nothing needed improvement . A seamless experience.
Come early , it...
Read moreIn town for the weekend, staying in Simpsonville. We saw "The Slice" on friday night, but it was completely packed and decided to come back another time. On sunday night we decided to give it a try. I called ahead to see what slices they had available. The service on the phone was average, I had no concerns.
When we arrived at the slice counter I observed a fly buzzing around and landing on one of the pizzas. So I decided to order off the other pies without the fly on them. I know it's going in the oven to be heated up but it's still not something you wanna see. 🪰🍕
The employee put our slices we ordered in the oven. Then she turned to her coworker and they started chatting, giggling and counting change from the cash drawer.
Plenty of time had passed and I was about to approach the girl and ask about my pizza slices before they were burnt. She must have felt me looking at her because her eyes darted up at me and with panic in her eyes she suddenly remembered she had put our slices in there a while ago.
I turned to my son and said "she better not touch our food with her dirty hands". Right then, I called it! One of the slices didn't set in the box right and she used her dirty cash hands to move it into the box.
I worked in the food service industry. I don't feel I have unrealistic expectations. When I see unsanitary situations, I speak up. Hopefully it means she won't forget her food safety protocols again.
I told her I saw her touch my food with her dirty hands. She did offer to remake it , I declined. I didn't want to be there anymore after waiting and I already paid. I saw she touched the crust so I just planned on cutting the crust off where she touched it.
Nobody is perfect, I get that. However, I'm leaving a review so that maybe the management can review sanitation with all their staff and maybe find a way to keep the flies off their pizzas?
Fyi, the pizza was decent. Maybe we would have been more impressed if I didn't have that situation...
Read moreI’ve ordered here often and here’s my honest review. The food is amazing. The last 3 times I’ve ordered there’s been an issue. First order of last three orders with issues- Part of my order was garlic knots supposed to be 6 got 5 and hardly any garlic on top ( I’ve had them many times and this time the taste was great but missing a knot and lack of garlic ) I was sent a survey and figured why not I’ll let them know. They were so kind and gave me a generous gift card to make up for it and I didn’t even ask or expected that at all. Ordered again Mushroom Pizza it was so tasty! It was missing 1/8th of the pie, looked like it had been burnt and they cut off a section. I paid for that with the gift card so I was not going to say anything. Just spent almost $34.00 for a Sicilian Pizza with Pepperoni- amazing as always but is very small. Much smaller than usual I have ordered the Sicilian often and it’s always a good size. I opened the box while I was there and mentioned to the young lady who rang me up that it looked really small. She said yeah it does look really small. The woman behind her seemed to be annoyed and rolled her eyes at what I said but not directly at me. The young lady said I can ask, she went back and the gentleman said to her we do it in a pan ( he did a square in the air with his fingers ) Maybe the pans are smaller now? The young lady can over and told me what he said, I heard him and watched his demeanor. They honestly just seemed busy and annoyed that I questioned it and no management came over to say anything. So it’s been 3 times that they’ve been off Par. In the past they always knocked it out of the ball park. The food is super tasty and the best Italian around, it’s pricey and I don't mind paying for it if it’s consistent. Ultimately I’m just disappointed at how questioning the size seemed to irritate them so much. I paid took my pizza and left. Pizza was great but didn’t feed my teenagers like it has...
