The Original Pancake House — Restaurant in South Bend

We had high hopes pulling in as the parking lot was fairly packed on a Monday afternoon. The portions are large here. On most of the tables. There was plenty of food left over. That was definitely the case with us. The wait staff was very friendly. Place resembles a old style diner. Now to the food. Maybe it's just Indiana cuisine, but I was not a fan of any of the food. The pancakes were thin and dry. Although they had ok flavor. The syrup was not syrupy. It was very runny. Maybe that's an Indiana thing. The Omelette I got was a farmer's omelette. The gravy was just okay at best. The Omelette was baked. Not something I'm used to. Came out very thick and flavorless. The potatoes had a weird flavor that I can attribute to a dirty griddle or maybe cooked in grease from something else, but they were not palatable. Not to mention they were not warm. Overall my meal was not very tasty at all. I would not recommend going here. The wife got pigs in a blanket. Very simple sausage link wrapped in pancake and doused with powdered sugar. The pancakes are buttermilk style but you can get a variety. Our food was consistent with other tables and I did notice that every table had a lot of leftover food. So like I said the portions are very large. I had a few bites of everything and concluded that it wasn't going to get better. The environment is friendly and clean. But a little dated. I stepped one foot into the bathroom yesterday (7/19/25) and the floor was wet and greasy, and I went down onto both knees. I had to be helped up by other women and one of them said she was going to get a manager. No one ever came while I was in the bathroom, and I made my way back to my booth, where my son was waiting. The food was wonderful, and the service was great, as always, but not one staff member ever approached me, and I was in so much pain after we ate so my son took me to go get seen at an ER. I have to see an orthopedic surgeon this week. I tried phoning back this morning to discuss this with them, and the phone was constantly busy for two hours before they finally closed. I get the feeling they just leave it off the hook because I kept trying back over and over again for five or 10 minutes at a time. I plan on going in there, and it’s not like I want to hire a lawyer and sue them. I just wanted to discuss the way they keep their bathroom, and I want to make them aware that I was seriously injured. Both of my knees. My pain level was rising, and I just wanted to get out of there, but in hindsight, I should have asked for a manager right away. I’m just not normally like that; I don’t like to be seen as a Karen. Delicious food HUGE portions. Our waitress had a huge table she had several needy customers. We were only a 2 person party. Took us a while get drinks, and order. Our waitress was very sweet and apologetic. I'm very patient. I noticed that the other servers in the area we sat, did not help the other waitress with the LARGE PARTY. She maybe didn't want help or maybe thats just how it is. But I asked the servers that weren't busy for take out boxes so we could get out of there. Yes we were there 2 hours as well. I stood up to get our check and she apologized again and asked if we wanted coffee to go and walked us up to pay immediately. I asked her, because I noticed how busy the large party was, why was no one helping her? She was super sweet and started to get emotional but I assured her she was doing a fabulous job. Maybe a little more team work among servers, when other areas are not as demanding. Your food is GREAT! Your place was PACKED and that speaks volumes about your restaurant. But 2 hours is too long for Breakfast. If tables have 8or more there needs to be more servers helping otherwise our table should have been given to the server where we sat.
