This is a nice-looking place where many other businesses have failed in our community. This business will also fail here as the owner behaves as a know-it-all - AND IS CULTURALLY AND INSENSITIVE to what he believes to be 'proper' first names. You would be better served at a fraction of the price at the Martin's Grocery Store Salad bar!
When they first opened and we offered friendly suggestions about having seating in the place, he was resistant - when we shared what some of our favorite salads were at the other place in town he chaffed at the idea of any change and instead of welcoming ideas in one of the most consistent spots of business failures on SR 23 he told customers why things wouldn't work instead of the simple task of looking into if it 'could work' down the line. Sure, it's his business - but as people who want to support local businesses, who were asked how we liked everything, we didn't want to offer opinions to be told basically to shut up (people so often ask how things are but only want praise).
They claim not to be able to give you water with your order (just water to buy in a bottle), despite being connected to great tap water provided by the city of South Bend to their location.
Further, a friend of mine went into the restaurant today, and when he gave his somewhat unique name, the owner said, "I need your first name." This is all kinds of attempts at cultural norming and insensitive -- my friend even spelled the name for him (and has no accent whatsoever with his English). My friend left angry and told the manager so. The manager/owner came out the back door to try and further argue and engage with my friend (he initially thought the manager was coming to apologize) -- given that my friend was ordering a salad that cost nearly $20 and wanted a cup/glass of water (not a bottle housed in plastic further filling a land-fill) - this seems insane - the mark-up on that salad has to be more than 50% - and if the owner/manager wants to take his puritanical views into the business world, then I'm very sure this will be another failed business at this location - and good riddance to bad actors in our community.
I miss when the customer was right in this country, and business owners worked to improve experiences and did not work to escalate already bad experiences!
Salads to go - must go from our community - sooner than later...
Read moreLet me start by saying I love to support local businesses as much as possible and I understand how hard it is right now to thrive...however:
Pros: Local small business, healthy options, close to everything, lots to choose from, friendly enough service, portion size, convenient to-go in a hurry
Cons: Price, chicken was not at all "grilled" or homemade and definitely not worth it's upcharge (it tasted like the gross watery chunk chicken from a bag in the cold isle that's boiled and fake grilled), no lime (insert sad face)
I've been wanting to try this place for a long time. I make a lot of salads at home and also cook as a hobby. I stopped in today and ordered a small Southwest Salad. It was $9 for a small. Ok, not bad. This did not include a protein. Ok, now add $5 more dollars for grilled chicken. This puts us at $14 for a small salad big enough for one person. Add a drink and cookie, I'm now at $21+. Still not a problem, except the portion/quality, did not match the price. The chicken literally killed the salad and I wasted $5 because I chose not to eat it. I also understand that groceries are at an all time high, so I take that into account. But as a public consumer, who doesn't get a bulk discount like a restaurant, I could have purchased everything to make the exact salad, including real chicken I grilled, and made one for a fraction of the price. I wanted so badly to like this place, but I unfortunately don't see myself going back for the price/quality. Maybe their other protein options are better? But I highly do not recommend the chicken if you like fresh ingredients. I do however hope they thrive because there are people out there that don't choose to buy and make their own food at home, so this a great convenient option for them. Plus I'd much rather see a locally owned business...
Read moreWe found this placed via Google and we were very pleased about the quality and healthy options available. My husband and I were visiting the area and found Tossed Togo as a place to me my dietary needs as well as eating healthy. This place was a gem and fitted our needs perfectly. When I was asking the gal about ingredients, the owner over heard and came right to the order counter to answer all my questions. I am gluten free and also can't have canola oil, sunflower oil, or vegetable oil. The owner said they don't use any of their oils in their dressings and most things were gluten free (for example not crispy chicken). I had the Carrie's Favorite salad with the lemon vingerette and my husband had the buffalo chicken salad. Both were so filling and fresh ingredients. My portion was the side salad and my husband had the regular size and both salads were filling for us. The only thing that we wish is there were dine in options. Of course the name is "to go", but since we were passing through we were hoping to sit down. They do have benches that we sat on and ate and the owner did throw away our stuff. Either way, what a great find. We highly recommend for a healthy feel...
