Skippy's Gyros — Restaurant in South Elgin

Awful, just truly awful!

Let me start off by saying that I'm not a big gyro guy, however, my parents enjoys this place on occasion so I make an exception when they decide they want it. Since I don't really care for traditional gyro meat, I usually opt for something else on their menu like a burger, but this time I decided to go with a chicken gyro.

I've had their chicken gyro a couple times in the past and always enjoyed it. Nice, thinly shaved and seasoned chicken (correction, not chicken kebab but thinly sliced) piled high on a warm, fluffy pita with shredded lettuce tomatoes and onions, what's not to like? THE CHICKEN GYRO I GOT DURING MY LAST VISIT, THAT'S WHAT!!!

I ordered a chicken gyro with lettuce, tomato, grilled onions and tzatziki sauce on the side. While this is technically what I received, the amount of care, or really lack thereof that went into creating it is truly shameful!

Lets start with the Chicken. To my surprise it wasn't thinly sliced spit chicken, but just a plain ol' grilled and sliced chicken breast, Okay fine, whatever, it's still chicken right? Yeahhh no. This was burnt, dry, and completely devoid of any seasoning.

then there's the toppings. The shredded lettuce was wilting, the diced tomato was bland and the grilled onions were overdone. All these toppings were then haphazardly thrown on top with a lack of care that made it seem like someone just took a great big handful of each from a receptacle sitting nearby and just threw it on top.

I can only assume that was the case, because after I drove less than10 minutes home, the pita bread was completely drenched and splitting down the middle from all the water/juices coming off the toppings. Fortunately I had ordered a second pita to go with it in expectation of the mountain of meat that I've gotten in the past so I ended up transferring everything over to that one.

Oh, and that tzatziki sauce I had asked for on the side? yeah, they gave me Greek dressing instead. At least I assume that's what is was as it had no taste to it. fortunately I was ordering food with family so they had extra tzatziki sauce with theirs, not that it helped much as it also didn't really taste like much of anything.

Lastly, I had ordered a side of fries to go with it, but really wish I hadn't as these fries were somehow burnt and soggy at the same time and only half were salted. they were also crammed into a paper cup and carelessly tossed in my takeout bag. Don't get the fries, they'll give you a lot, but you'll only eat a few before you're grossed out.

Never really had anything bad to say about Skippies in the past. food was never anything special but it least tasted good and was actually edible! But my gyro was screwed up in so many different ways and the end result was truly tasteless and unappetizing, and served with a side of disgusting ass fries. I only made it through about half of the gyro before my stomach started audibly gurgling, as if it was shouting at me to quit eating it, and the fries I ate maybe like 15 of them.

strangely enough, my order was the only one in our whole order that was truly bad as my parents who both got regular gyros had no issue with their food, except that the cook put tzatziki sauce on one of them when it was supposed to be on the side.

I'm not one to normally write bad reviews on Google, but this left such a bad taste in my mouth, metaphorically and quite literally that I felt I needed to say something.

Needless to say, I won't be returning anytime soon. Get your act together Skippies.

Most recent visit 10/13/23 I ordered 2 gyros and ordered the meat well done and fries well done again just like last visit , well well they cant seem to get directions right no matter how many times you tell them twice at the speaker n once more at the window as I handed my payment card I was told " yep" . Now at home like clock work it's not as asked , I called and spoke to a very nice sympathetic young lady said she was a manager , I explained my situation and she agreed that at least I'm owed 16 bucks off my next order then she told me to hold then the guy that I know that runs the place got on the phone to tell me I can come back ( more inconvenience) and that was my only option..Well as you can imagine friday night finally home and wanna eat after I was told that I couldn't take it anymore...I have supported these local stores and restaurants especially , since I moved here 27 years ago definitely during te year of 2020( proof is in my reviews and locations I've visited,) and this is the thanks I get ! mind you I've dropped $55.00 last visit and 37 bucks this visit....times are hard I understand but clearly this is the nature of this location...I'm done spending my hard earned money here....The next writing is my previous visit before this one ......Recently visited and ordered the gyro meat well done, n even reminded them at the pick up window n they said they are on it , well it wasn't well done. I ordered a charred hotdog (which cost more???y I have no idea) it was bathed in way too much mustard soaking the bun n ripped the bun n caused a mess of it all.....a experience worth coming back to??? My girlfriend wanted to go get some food, because we both haven’t eaten all day. She takes really good care of me, however I couldn’t decide what to go get, so we went for a drive first before choosing a destination. So we hopped in the Caddy, and off we went. It was a beautiful night for a drive, the sun set was amazing. She showed me her cool LED lights inside the Caddy, I’m not going to lie I was pretty jealous. On a previous date, she told me she never had a gyro before, so at last we arrived at our destination. Skippy’s Gyros.

We pulled in the drive thru, and took a quick gander over at the menu, and decided to go with 2 Gyros and an order of Greek Fries. This one was a pretty easy choice, straight to the point. My girlfriend and I aren’t too picky, we enjoy very similar food.

The wait wasn’t bad at all, the cashier was extremely nice. I am pretty sure my girlfriend wanted to give him a hug. We got our food, and headed home.

The gyros were amazing. My girlfriend only had one bite left, but she couldn’t finish. I was pretty proud of her, because she is a light eater. The Greek fries, I enjoyed, my girlfriend not so much. I can agree we both had better on that part, but the Gyro did not disappoint.

All said and done. I would go back to...
