I really want to like this place but I can't.
Lets start with the pros: Buns are good The frosted mug is nice
Cons:
The pricing is insane.
I got the Big H Fry Combo, which is $16.65. That's for some fries (soggy but the taste was good), fry sauce, a drink, and a 1/4 lb hamburger. I thought about not getting a drink because I didn't really want one but then I looked at getting the burger and fries. The fries are $4.75 and if you want fry sauce they charge $0.55 extra for a few ounces. That right there will prevent me from coming back here just on principle.
Go to JCWs right down the street. You can get a 1/3 lb hamburger with pastrami for $10 and then fries and a drink for an additional $5 and as much fry sauce as your heart desires for free. More food for less money.
Their menu is misleading.
They have a Grilled Chicken Salad on their menu. Next to the name it has an *. At the bottom of the page it says *Breaded Chicken. I thought that that must mean you could also get the chicken salad with fried chicken. I asked the waiter and he said it is only breaded chicken. You do not grill breaded chicken. You fry it. Therefore it is not a grilled chicken salad it is a fried chicken salad. The same goes for their grilled chicken sandwiches and grilled fish sandwiches. They are all breaded. It's just dishonest frankly. It was also a disappointment for my wife who can't have gluten and was planning on getting the grilled chicken salad.
This is kind of besides the point but the email address that they put at the bottom of their menu doesn't actually exist. That's why you're reading all of this publicly now :)
I would really like this place to succeed but its going to require...
Read moreFirst experience not great. Came in just after 11am and the place wasn’t overwhelmed like I expected. I wish it would have been to give them a break for being too occupied with other patrons to be able to serve me. I sat there watching others come in after me and get served before me. I decided to leave and try again later in the day. Second time around they just ran out of chili. Maybe on day 1 be ready to serve your full menu until the end of the business day. To be fair the root beer in the mug was ok, and the raspberry shake was fine. I am disappointed with the size of the mug though, it’s too small for $3.50. Also, when the shake prices sky rocket up to $6 each that will be the end for me. A $6 price tag for a milkshake is ridiculous. The burger was fine, but overpriced for what you get. It was a very thin patty. I thought about sending out a search party to find it. It kind of felt like I was just eating bun at times. Only problem is I wasn’t there to enjoy the bun. The fries were above average. I like the skin on fries. They appear to be very stingy with sauces. .55 for every 2 ounces. 1 two ounce tub will only take care of about half the fries. Also, disappointed that there is no Litzas Pizza options. That did not factor into my rating. Overall not what I was expecting. Just too expensive for what you get. Was hoping to become a regular customer here, but I hate to say the value just...
Read moreI’m a big fan of Hires, even though I haven’t been there for a while. I was excited to eat at their new location before a concert at America First Square. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement.
Even though there is an entrance to the Square, it was blocked because of the concert, so you have to walk around to what looks like the back of the building. But jokes on you, cause that’s the front, where the hostesses and cash registers are.
My Big H Burger was tasty, but it seemed like it was all bun, no meat. Seriously, the burger party was almost slider-sized. The onion rings looked done, but the onion was completely raw. Clearly, the oil temp was way too high, resulting in raw onions. Not good at all. And nobody stopped to ask how the food was, because the dropped the check with the food.
Oh, and the frosted mug of root beer sweat (which they tend to do), but they didn’t give any napkins until they brought my food, and even then, my “napkin” was a paper towel folded into quarters.
And a small burger, 7 raw onions rings, and a small mug of root beer was $20, before tip. And then because you pay at the tiny entrance, I had to shuffle around patrons waiting for a seat, because the are you walk in is a very tiny area.
Oh, and the decor is bland, and the space is not only oddly shaped, but awfully noisy. The other patrons weren’t particularly loud, but...
