Mexicali Cantina Grill — Restaurant in Spencer

Don't normally write a lot of reviews. But this is one that I won't forget and have others watch out. Went with my family June 12th. Service and place has gone down hill dramatically. I have been to this place a bunch of times. Food was dry and terrible, and portions were smaller. My kids food was ok to them. The thing that disappointed me the most was that there waitress stole money from us. That's not Ok. We gave them Debit card to pay, wrote the word "Cash" on the receipt and below total of 111.00 and signed. We put 15.00 in cash in Payment booklet and gave to Waitress. We had a pending charge on our bank account for 111.00. Not a couple days later the charge went through as 131.00. So they decided to add an additional 20.00 to our bill? When we clearing left 15.00 cash, put the words "Cash" for tip amount and signed. So how do they get away with stealing? I understand it's 20.00 dollars but what gives them to right to add in what they want! Even if I didnt tip as its a common curiosity but you are not obligated to pay a tip for services regardless. Me and my Wife have called since then and asked nicely to get our money back. With a response of oh it will take 48 to 72 hours to put back on your card! I went back last night almost a week later and spoke with the Owner, as he apologized to what happend and said our credit reader system messed up? The owner also mentioned that he would give me his buisness if the money didn't go back in the account! What kind of rude comment is that!!! Really and I asked please give me my money back and continued to say wait another 48 to 72 hours to see it in your bank. They seem to take it as a joke and not take there mistakes or even a mistake if it was seriously as they stole from me, thinking I would not notice and were pleased to add in an extra amount that wasn't even on the receipt that we signed and smudged in what they wanted. I don't care if it was a 1 or 200.00 dollars, it's plain stealing and fraud!!! Unfortunately with this game play, anyone else that goes there that is paying Cash tip, take pictures of your receipt it will hopefully help. I will wait the 48 hours again as the owner said. It's really sad how they dealt with this. If nothing is received I will proceed to waste more time, getting a new card and putting a dispute in with my bank. Hopefully this will bring attention to others going there and they will own up to there behavior!

We have recently moved to the area and for over 10 years went to a Mexicali in Webster so we were excited to be moving to Spencer and carrying on our tradition of margaritas and goodies. WELL that was short lived! We have tried to make it a go but after tonight we give up and will go some where else. The food I have to be honest is up and down and could be tolerated but the incredibly horrible rude hostess can not be overlooked. When we go in to pickup our orders for some reason we always get the most unpleasant blond young lady, who for the life of me after sitting and watching how she speaks to customers, I can not understand why she has not been fired. I can only surmise that she is management’s daughter and that is why she is allowed to work there. Tonight we were on the delivery end of her distasteful rude behavior. We had to call because when we got home part of our dinner was not in the bag. I called the restaurant and was greeted “yah hi” I had to ask is this Mexicali? “Yah” I politely said we came home and are missing an item from our order “ yah so what do you want” is rudely snapped at me. We would like to come back and get the item please, “ok” slam went the phone. When we came in there was a young pleasant girl with dark hair who I explained I called in and was picking up a missing item, which she presented to me. I also decided to inquire about my online request for additional flour tortillas and that young rude girl with the blond hair and all the rings in her face, who I dread seeing comes over and snaps at me “we don’t give that away for nothing” I politely ignored her rude behavior and asked the pleasant your lady if I could pay for the extra tortillas and did so. The rude one stormed into the kitchen came back a few minutes later and threw them on the counter…not handing them to me but threw them. My mother voice wanted to say what is wrong with you? If you hate your job so much, please for all of the customers sake go find another job! So it was then that we decided as much as we love Mexicali we will not pay good money to be verbally assaulted by some 20 something year old who clearly is not suitable to be in any customer service...

I thought this place was great. The perfect refuge for my crew n I when we had to flee the terptown throwdown cuz of a brewing thunderstorm. (We never did get to see the Elovaters :( btw!) But rest assured that based on our experience, ending any day at the Mexicali grill is always gotta be a good bet. Good drink selection with plenty of fun and creative cocktails and delicious beers and wines. Food choices were quite ample as well and the staff was fun and friendly. Atmosphere was just want we were looking for not to up tight and not too crazy. We felt quite at home there. The only thing they lost points on was when I ordered the side of rice and beans I was expecting black beans to come with the rice as a default but they were refried beans. Which I still ate and they were quite fine I just would prefer if every place that offered rice and beans would keep to the yellow rice and black beans order of things. If anyone wants another type of bean they should be made to ask not me. :) But then I feel the same way about ordering a cheeseburger... If I say "I want a burger with cheese" why then do u hand me a thing with not only a burger, cheese, the bun (which clearly is implied) but also onions, mustard (and it's never a good mustard always blah yellow.. 😝), pickels, ketchup and damn iceberg lettuce (which is clearly a waste of everyone's time-i mean, come on now..😑) the people who want these damn variations should be the ones made to specify in their requests not I, the man searching for a simple burger which corresponds to it's name a...
