Outstanding, Happy Hour!

One of the best things about being retired is having the ability to attend an early in the day, Happy Hour. No Ordinary Rabbit has its HH, 3PM - 5 PM. Most people are still at work, but us retirees can go and have basically the entire place to ourselves.

My BFF and I went yesterday to celebrate her birthday early. It was the first time for both of us and we were totally gobsmacked. The cocktails were masterfully prepared and the appetizers aka small plates were impressive, too. The linen napkins, gold flatware and the stemware used for the cocktails added to the total experience.

I am a fan of Onion Rings and theirs are made in house and I recommend that you order them. They're on the smaller size, so they'll not be super filling. I also recommend the Whipped Feta and their House Potato Chips with "special sauce". You'll be pleased with all of these. They'll be perfect accompaniments to your cocktails.

While we celebrated the birthday, I enjoyed three different cocktails. Don't judge me, I'm retired and can drink in the middle of the day. I started off with, No Ordinary Rabbit. It's one of their, N.O.R. cocktails and is made with rye, one of my favorite liquors. I would have had a second one, but I am a vodka man and wanted to try their Wet Martini. Then my third cocktail to wrap up the celebration was an, Old Fashioned. All three were outstanding. I loved watching the bartender make our drinks from the table. She was masterful in her skills. The drinks were so good, I tipped her separately as I exited the restaurant.

In addition to my drinks, my friend had her own. Just look at my posted pictures and know that she gave them a thumbs up, too.

The ambiance is super cool and relaxing. It's rather chic and contemporary. While you are there, be sure to go and check out the non-gender restrooms. One of them has a green toilet and the other is gold. After seeing the green one, I had t peek in and see what color the other one was when I was returning to my table.

Service was attentive...

If you haven't found this amazing place yet, then it is a hidden gem. During our 1st visit (which won't be the last), we tried the Za'atar onion rings, the Chorizo\date Meatballs, and the Lemon-Basil Gnudi with Chicken sausage. Let me tell you that each dish was basically a flavor explosion! Onion rings to start... the light crispy beading\seasoning was to die for, then when you dip in the labneh sauce that comes with it... Wow! We never heard of labneh... All you need to know is It's just great! The Choizo\date meatballs with the sauce, pancetta, and onions all together were amazing. Then the lemon basil Gnudi with Chicken sausage all the toppings and sauce paired perfectly together. All the dishes had items and flavors that you wouldn't typically see in most menus through STL. I loved the Mezcal drink as well and had many. My wife loved the sparkling reisling (which I hope they continue to offer). If you look at the menu and you are not familiar with items or ingredients listed... You have to experience this and try for yourself. I gave the food, vibe, and people all a 10\10. We already picked out the things we will be trying during...

Outside of the onion rings it was one of the worst meals I've had recently at a restaurant. What really did it in for me was the $16 bowl of mac& cheese with harissa. I could not discern any flavor because the pasta was overpowering with an over cooked dense & gummy texture which was so strangely unpalatable I couldn't really eat any more than a bite. My companion was curious about the unpalatable aspect too and we were at odds to figure out what had happened. The waitress didn't really ask us if it was ok and just chirpily took away a nearly full bowl. Service was super slow and we had been waiting so long I didn't feel like sending it back and getting something else. The mussels were ok but there was so much broth I was glad for the spoon and just ate it like soup. The flavor was thin but not unpleasant. For that much broth I'd wished for more bread for which they charge for extra and I understand and I didn’t complain about. I thought portion sizes were fine but that being said I'm not sure why it gets such high reviews. Unless you want an appetizer go...

Housed in the former Nixta space, No Ordinary Rabbit has not only met but exceeded the legacy of its predecessor. Plenty of space at the bar early on a Saturday evening. The cocktail menu is expansive without being overwhelming, and everyone should be able to find something that suits their taste. Additionally, the wine menu is full of options to fit anyone's desires. The full dinner menu doesn't come on until 5pm, so I went with the sardines just for something different and was very surprised how well the bread, sardine, salt, and lemon went together for a nice and light dinner substitute. Now for the cocktails... wonderfully mixed and flavorful, so much so the alcohol really creeps up without notice.
