The temperate house maintains a pleasant Mediterranean climate year-round. It features a courtyard done up in the Moorish style, complete with a babbling fountain. Many of the plants here are referenced in the Christian Bible and the garden has provided context about the origin of their names and references. Non-Christians visiting the garden do not have to worry about this feeling preachy or...

What a pleasure to have the Shoenberg Arid House open again! It is quite an experience walking through the Moorish walled garden and feeling as if we were in an exotic locale. There are many interesting plants, flowers, and cacti to look at.

The main entrance from the outside is not accessible, since there are stairs nearby, but the Arid House can be accessed from the...

This arid house felt like I was transported to a different state/country while it was cold and dreary early spring in Saint Louis. Some of the plants have a peculiar smell that’s similar to those in Arizona. The blue tiles etc were reminiscent of Greece. Azaleas were in full bloom outside when I went back in May.
