I had high hopes based on the Google reviews but I think some people review before they actually eat. Gus's has very nice people who are working very hard, but the food and front end were a bit of a mess.
We are there the evening of July 8, 2022, about 5:30 PM. The young lady seating us was unsure where she should sit our party of three, and she settled on the first one she came to, but it had not been cleaned. We found this out when we sat down and stuck to the table, but the mess wasn't clearly visible in her defense. Apparently no manager for the front end keeps track of availability. Our waitress did correct this issue, and we ordered medium burgers, fries, coleslaw and soup.
First up was the clam chowder soup and coleslaw. Both were pretty tasty, and we figured we were in for a treat. We thought it very odd to serve the slaw by itself and it should come with the meal. The soup is a course of its own, but not slaw. We let it slide, they were busy.
The burgers and fries all arrived, but the burgers had no pink at all. They were dry but had sauce for flavor. Fries were rather tasteless in our opinion, and the food seems like standard fare bought from a mediocre food supply like Sysco. The sodas were an odd flavor as well, like stale. Maybe not cleaned in a while.
Looking for something to redeem the outing we found they had pies, and based on the numbers and variety assumed they were made frequently and were fresh. So very wrong. The coconut cream was not pulled from a pie tin, but was in the cooler as a single serve. The area of cream filling at the outside edge not covered by whip topping was orange and not yellow like a normal Coconut cream pie. That area was hard and not edible. I tried the front before I had noticed and it was very processed tasting and not so great. Inedible. Dutch apple had a pile of sugar dumped at the edge and tasted sub-par for in our opinion is one of the better tasting pies when done right. Butterfinger pie, flavorless and old, icky.
$75 for three people with this poor food quality, all of which we showed our waitress and she comped only the coconut cream pie, I cannot recommend anyone eating here and we will...
Read moreGreat mom and pop place. I always appreciate the hustle and bustle of local diners. This was my first time here and the one thing I regret is not coming here sooner. Came with my mom and my sister. The waitress was super nice and helpful, especially meeting the demands of my needy sister. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak or Country Fried Steak breakfast. Absolutely amazing. Cannot believe that you get THAT much food for $15-16. You literally could split it with someone else. So my country fried steak was fried to a perfect crispy outside texture, while the inside had that burger patty texture, accompanying that with some nice Country gravy or sausage gravy. It was amazing. I'm a fan of Cracker Barrel's version too, but this one had more of a homey feel to it. It also came with some eggs, however you like it, as well as some hash browns and pancakes. I was full and had to take the rest home, which fed me for another 2 meals. This place is the real deal.
On a side note, my mom and sis ordered some oatmeal and biscuits and gravy. They were super pretty happy with the whole experience. The only minus was that we were charged for hot water. They charged it as ordering hot tea, but the waitress was quick to correct that so we weren't charged for ordering water hot or cold. Thanks for the experience. Looking forward to trying other menu items, not just the breakfast, but lunch and menu items. Sun Prairie PEEPS, this place...
Read moreIt all started since we sat down. We had our two year old with us and usually we are asked if we need a highchair or booster seat. Nope, we weren’t. They came over to us after five minutes and asked if we were ready to order drinks, I asked for a high chair instead. She dropped it off and left. It sat there with sticky food inside of it. Another woman comes to the table to take our drink order, I asked for the highchair to be cleaned first. She cleaned and then never took our drink order. Waited another five minutes and finally we were asked for our drink order. They came back after another five minutes to take our order and we got our food pretty fast, but nothing about it was good. The waffle I got was hard, my husbands food didn’t have much flavor and my daughter only ate a few fries from her Mac and cheese and fry plate. Oh, should mention my husband didn’t get his toast when we got our food. The waitress asked if he had side and he told her, but didn’t get it for 15 minutes. We barely ate anything. Except the shakes and those were phenomenal. We got charged forty dollars for it and left with a stomach ache. We didn’t even know who our waitress was because we had so many different ones stop by to help us. We even listened to them argue about who’s tables are who’s. This place if very disorganized and the food definitely does not...
