I had a piece of plastic in my sandwich a while back when the previous owner was there. He told me the next time he was going to give me a complimentary sandwich, that wasn't the case on my following visit. Now that they are under new ownership, I ordered a banh mi with egg (sunny side up/trung op la). When it came out fully cooked, I gritted my teeth and just ate it. The next visit, I ordered the same thing but this time I specifically told the same lady that I wanted the egg runny and I made sure she heard it. She brushed it off and did not tell the workers in the back. When the order came out, the egg was fully cooked. I then gave the banh mi back to her and said that the egg was overcooked. She said it was going to take a while, so I waited. When it came back out, I was anticipating an egg that was sunny side up. Lo and behold, it was fully cooked..again. If I pay for food to be made a certain way, and I specifically ask for it made that way, you should make it that way or refuse the order. The lady had the nerve to tell me that I shouldn't eat eggs that way and it was bad for my health. I paid for a sandwich, not for them to mess up on a sandwich 2x and a lecture. This hole in the wall does not deserve 4 1/2...
Read moreThe chef here is a master bread maker. My banh mi ham sandwich came with the best French baguette I've tasted in the Bay Area. It is superb and puts that other local bread, Dutch Crunch, to shame. I honestly haven't had such a delicious baguette since moving here from New York.
The breakout star was the pate chaud. It's chicken or pork pate tucked into buttery phylo dough and the texture was a delightful surprise--light, crispy, and flaky. Talent like this is wasted on just bread alone. I hope the chef ventures into making more types of French-Vietnamese fusion pastries!
UPDATE: Ordered the BBQ pork sandwich and still stand by my belief that they make the best French baguette in the Bay Area. I'm guessing that at noon the baguettes will be fresh out of the oven, so your best banh mi experience may be around that time.
Know that this is a neighborhood mom and pop store, so until they get to know you service may be a bit gruff and cold. But once they see you're a regular, service is much friendlier.
So impressed with this unassuming little shop. Modest facade,...
Read moreI live off of Evelyn Ave which is like three blocks from this shop. The atmosphere is VERY cold in there. Let me elaborate, there isn't a warm welcome when you step in and maybe the owners of this shop operate like that. There was no greeting actually so I already felt like I was in the wrong business. The woman at the front uses a very firm tone with the customers, no facial expression what so ever. She looks like she is having a bad day and it is appalling to know that people accept this type of customer service.
I don't ask anyone to "shine my boots" but if Im going to give a shop my business when there are plenty of other shops to choose from, I would prefer to do business pleasantly. The shop looks a little bare, they have a few tables with goods on them and a frige of desserts.
I ordered 2 Bahn mi which were okay, best thing about the Bahn mi was the bread. It could use some sauce on the inside. The grilled pork was dry and hard to chew. The dessert was pretty damn good 🔥. It had coconut milk, taro and jelly.
I personally wouldn't come here again...
