Don Ruben's Mexican Food, was going home to ABQ! Food, service and decor all excellent. After reading reviews we decided to go visit and have a late lunch. As we entered, a couple just leaving, asked if this was a first time visit. We said yes and they said in unison that you're going to love it. That's a good start to our visit. Despite the Restaurant being with Valentine's Ash Wednesday couples we were quickly seated in a booth by the windows. The decor was definitely Mexican with a subtle stylized contemporary touch. A large bowl of Chips and three dishes of salsa's almost met us as we sat. Our server explained the heat level of the dishes and asked for our drink orders. We took our time to review the menu. Lunch specials were on the last page of the menu but we wanted to try some larger combos. I had the #1 combo ... Cheese Enchilada, beans, rice, Shredded Beef Taco, and Bean Tostada. My wife had the #8 Green Corn Tamale and Green sauced Cheese Enchilada with beans and rice both arrived with a "plate is hot" warning from our server Mario and that warmed our New Mexican hearts. With enough plates to cover our table we dove into our late celebration luncheon. The food was spiced perfectly; not too hot just right for our tastes. Having been to several metro area Mexican sit down restaurants since we move from ABQ, Don Ruben's hit all the perfect NM notes. Beans were creamy, cheese enchiladas were filled with cheese, and tacos shell was restaurant made (not your typical factory formed shell) and beef perfectly seasoned. My wife's green corn Tamale was excellent. Green sauce was spicy, but masa perfect and slightly sweet. We always share a bite and we each commented on how wonderful they tasted. This was a perfect way to spend a special Valenine's Ash Wednesday. Don Ruben's gets a 4.95 rating; one sopapilla with honey away from perfection. We were looking for a new Mexican restaurant to try while celebrating my nieces recent high school graduation. Id never noticed this place before and had been in this same parking lot in the past at a few other food spots. I was please when we arrived to be greeted right away and that they had an available table for the five of us. Our server was friendly, took our drink order and left us to review the menu. We quickly ordered the spinach queso as well as the bean dip off their appetizer menu. I'm glad we also had the chips and salsa because the appetizers both came with flour chips which are horrible in my opinion. So we used the tortilla chips instead. I do wish the salsa was a bit spicier than salty. Both dips were delicious, but i really enjoyed the jalapeno cream cheese mixture in the bean dip. We ordered many different items for our main course from shredded beef tacos, carne asada taco plate, enchiladas etc. I loved, loved, loved the flavor of the green sauce on my chicken enchilada. My beef taco was a bit dry, but toppings etc were great. The bean tostada that came with the meal as well was tasty and beans had good flavor. The portions were good size and we did have to take some leftovers home. Pricing was amazing honestly. I cant remember the last time we ate anywhere with meals this large for under fifteen bucks. The place is a pretty good size, was clean and lighting good. It tends to be so dark in Mexican restaurants, All in all this was good spot and Id come again to try some other options.

First time coming here, I've heard alot about this place, that it was a must try. My Mom ordered the Red Chili Burrito with rice & beans. And she liked the red chili, had good seasoning & tenderness, she liked the beans alot. But we both agree that the rice was dry and didn't have any salt. I ordered the Fundido Loco plate. At first the chicken was dry, but when I got to the cream cheese and jalapeño cheese it was better & had good flavor. I agree the beans were really good. I also liked the chunky salsa that came with the chips. Our food came right away, which led me to believe they make chicken burritos and either freeze them or refrigerate them, then fry them per order. Which would explain why the chicken was dry and didn't have a fresh cooked taste. Overall I'd go back to maybe try the chorizo, is it make in house or bought from a butcher or store? I do want to offer a bit of advice... Lower your music!!! The Christian music was a lovely touch, but I couldn't hear my Mom taking majority of the time. Our customers next to us mentioned the same thing. Most people like to have conversations while they share a meal together.

I'm excited to share my 5-star review of Don Ruben's Mexican Restaurant in Surprise, AZ! This restaurant is special in my heart as my family has been coming here for over 7 years. After temporarily closing their doors, the owners are back! I hope some of the best wait staff will be in tow, too!

From the moment you step foot inside, you're greeted with warmth and hospitality. The staff, especially Stacy (sp?), & James, have become family to us. They've watched our family grow over the years and have been a part of countless gatherings & birthdays filled with laughter and good times.

Now, let's talk about the food. It's simply excellent. The flavors are authentic and truly shine through in every dish. But what really sets Don Ruben's apart is their margaritas. Trust me when I say these are the best margaritas I've ever had, and I've had my fair share. They have a secret recipe incorporating two different types of liquor, creating a unique and irresistible flavor.

When the restaurant reopens, be prepared for a bit of a wait. With its outstanding food and welcoming atmosphere, it's no surprise that Don Ruben's tends to get quite busy. But let me assure you, the wait is worth it. Once you take that first bite or sip of their margarita, you'll understand why people are willing to wait 45 minutes to an hour. It's an experience that you will want to experience.

So, if you're looking for a Mexican restaurant that feels like home, head over to Don Ruben's in Surprise, AZ. You'll be treated like family, enjoy incredible food, and indulge in the best margaritas you've ever tasted. Cheers to...
