Our first visit to this establishment left much to be desired. It was a rude and disconcerting experience from start to finish. The person at the counter, a young lady with earphones in her ears (rude counter person), contributed to the poor customer service experience. We looked around at the window items and noticed a small cafe with a few people dining in. While perusing the wall menu and in the process of placing an order, a lady who was already seated with food on her table approached the counter politely, asking for assistance. However, the rude counter person told her she had to get a number before placing an order. Despite the lady's polite inquiry, the counter person condescendingly repeated the instruction, leaving her frustrated and unattended.
As General Honore famously stated during Katrina with reporters, the attitude of the rude staff person here was like being “ You are stuck on Stupid.”
To make matters worse, when another staff member approached us, the same rude counter person bluntly asked, 'What do you want?' I mentioned that I was considering ordering a meal, to which she responded by asking if we had a number. Upon confirming we did not, she curtly informed us that we needed one to place an order. Her unprofessional tone and lack of empathy reminded me of service experiences reminiscent of the old Eastern Communist Bloc countries. The number dispenser, broken and poorly positioned near the entrance, added to the confusion, making it unclear when or where we were supposed to obtain a number. The instruction 'THOU SHALL GET A NUMBER BEFORE SERVICE' was not prominently displayed and was unclear.
The sad part is that the place was not crowded; only a few people were in the cafe area, and no one was waiting in line. Despite expressing that it was our first time there, the process was not explained clearly. However, it's worth noting that another staff member was helpful when she called out number 41 and offered assistance. She also kindly explained the pizza dough process, which was appreciated.
In summary, the lack of professionalism and care for customers in this establishment was disappointing. I informed the courteous staff member that we had lost our appetite and had no intention of dining there. Despite driving 23 miles to try this place, we were ultimately relieved to discover other non-chain restaurants with professional service and excellent meals. We will happily return to those establishments, but we have no plans to revisit this one.
It's a reminder to carefully choose where we invest our hard-earned money, prioritizing establishments that value and appreciate...
Read moreWarning: long post: We came in after the breakfast rush, so about 9ish. People were sitting down and eating and no one was there at the counter. We walked in and were looking at the breakfast/deli menu . An unhappy, grumpy middle aged lady came out and asked if we got a ticket, we said oh no, we’re looking at the menu (we weren’t aware we needed a ticket) she scolded us and kept saying , “ everyone needs a ticket, that’s why there’s a big fat sign at the door”. We said sorry we didn’t see it bc we were talking and just opened the door and walked in. Again, she loudly said, “ everyone needs it, that’s why there’s a big fat sign at the door “. She repeated this about 7-10 times. Then she rushed us to order , after each time we ramble to pick something, she kept asking again, “what can I get you” , “what can I get you”? So we hurriedly ordered , then sat down to eat. We asked if we needed to go back and get a ticket if we wanted to order some sweets to go; again, she repeated, “ everyone needs it, that’s why there’s a big fat sign at the door”. After eating , I went to grab a ticket, and she stopped me and asked , “ what can I get you?” I said, oh let me get a ticket first. She said, no you don’t need to. I then said, but you repeatedly said we needed to. She says no, there’s no one here at the counter. You don’t need it. (Mind you, all the other times, we were the only ones at the counter when she scolded us and repeatedly said to get a ticket, there’s a big fat sign at the door). As I’m looking at the desserts section, she again, hurriedly asked, “what can I get you, what can I get you”? I casually asked her name and she goes, “ oh we don’t give out our names”. Most likely bc she knew she was wrong and didn’t want us to complain about her. Or she had complaints in the past. I then said nevermind, I’m not going to order. I grabbed my hubby to go. A young teenager came out and I asked her what was that lady’s name . She said her name is Rebecca. So I asked if she was new? The young lady stated, “ that’s the owner’s wife”. Excuse me!? My jaw dropped! If the owner is seeing this: you need a new wife or have her stay at home bc she is ruining your business . As a small business owner, any business, you’d want to be kind and want your customers to return. Needless to say, we used to frequent this place, have ordered for parties, and have referred others , but we’re never ever returning and we already warned our friends and families. It’s...
Read morePart I: This place is by far the best bakery in the Surprise, Arizona area! I’ve tried quite a few other bakeries in Arizona and southern California and I can honestly say this place ranks up there with the best of them. When I depart with my hard earned cash I demand a quality product! I’ve now been to this bakery on multiple occasions and I can truly attest that every time I’ve purchased something, it’s been the highest quality and it has never disappointed me, my family, or my guests. The boss-man personally makes almost everything by hand like a traditional baker--and it's apparent in his product. I urge you to try other places in the valley and then try this bakery. I highly doubt you will be disappointed or find a superior product.
(There’s a bakery in Phoenix and Tempe called ‘Essence Bakery’ that I’ve tried on multiple occasions as well. Essence is also an amazing bakery, which sells an equally superb product. I consider Essence to be of the same quality caliber as My Daddy’s Bakery. However, it’s important to remember that Essence is a French bakery and My Daddy’s Bakery & Cafe is a New York style, Italian-American bakery, theses are two completely different concepts, but each produces simply amazing products.)
Part II: As for those complaining that the owner/staff is ‘rude,’ I’m almost positive there is more to the story than they are sharing. I have never had a rude experience with either the owner or anyone else working at the bakery. Second, the owner has always been respectful to me. The key word is “respectful.” That word does not mean that I am always right as the customer. The connotation of that word in this particular context means that the owner will not go out of his way to ‘be rude to me.’ However, he will also not tolerate me, or anyone, causing a ruckus in his place of business or being abusive to his employees. It’s a reasonable social contract to which I am willing to adhere.
I really do believe that you will not be disappointed. I highly recommend the New York cheesecake, the Napoleons, and the dinner items! ...
