On the out skirts of Harrisburg, PA. Around Fort Hunter. You might see this little dive looking place. Years ago is was a alternate life style bar called the purple lizard. Now looks like a bar where those going through a mid life crisis go to die. I was basically kidnapped and take to the glass lounge.. For a birthday Dinner. Was hoping for crawdaddies on 6th.. but here I am..
Walking through the front door, my horrors looked to be true. Small shabby bar and mid aged pardons was the first thing I saw. Off to the right hinted the dinning area.. we git there at 5pm.. the dining area was empty except one guy.. nursing a water.. Folks..it didn't look good for our hero. But my kidnapper ( AKA WIFE) Swore the food was amazing.. a little voice in my head reminded me, this woman thinks well done steaks are tasty to.
Well we were met with the wait staff.. any one could have been a bearded trucker named Alice. And shown to our seats. While looking around mainly for escape routes.. I took note of how creepy clean and old world charm it had.
Our waitress Billy Jo. Who was. Charming, sweet, patient and funny. Who took our orders. Now, the wife stated they had amazing steaks and seafood..
I had steak country steaks.. steaks you could cut with a fork and the smell alone would have you drooling.. these were not those steaks.. yes, the in house cutting was totally amazing. Thick, great and amazingly cooked to perfection. Truly could be a world class steak... except... no flavor.. not even a good salt and pepper... shame too.. Now steak in the steak salad was freaking amazing.. so there is some steak skill in this shack.
Now seafood. They actually had a selection of choices. I went calamari and scallops.. yes. I know, it's like I wanted to hate the place..But OMG.. So good. Soo good. The scallops were perfect. Truly on par with scallops from Boston. Soft, juicy, and flaky with flavor.. not dog chew toys like many PA restaurants. But a true joy to eat. Same for the calamari. Light breading, tender, slightly chewy. Perfect.
And this place will shock you on two key things, you usually find in NYC or finer dining. That is timing.
Many people don't even acknowledge timing.. the fine in tune mechanics of pardon, wait staff, and kitchen crew. So few place can achieve this gold standard. When the pardon finishes one dish, the dishes are taken away, and next dish placed in front of them. I went from drink, to appetizer, to main course, to desert. It a perfect transition. Truly perfect. And I also noted. The place was no longer empty.. which helped me understand why I was asked if I had a reservation for this place.
Yes, the place is smallish. And looks like Annyville horror from the dirt parting lot in the back.
But. The food and service was great.. ok the steak I had. Good.. but the whole dinning experience was great. And, I'll admit.....
Read moreWent to the lounge last saturday night with some friends. The atmosphere is kinda like a bar restaurant. was cozy and homey, but very loud. We all ordered the tenderloin with a salad and a order of mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat. The salad comes and has a ENOURMOUS amount of shredded carrots on it, im not sure why? is that their thing there? someone should tell you about that before ordering. There was almost more carrots than lettuce, this was not a good salad to start with. The mushrooms came out and i thought that was really not to appealing for a $20 appetizer, however i will say the mushrooms had ALOT of crabmeat in them and no filler, so it was well worth it. The crabmeat was good, but they really didnt have flavor or wow factor for a appetizer. Then our main coarse game. I was very confused when the steaks came. We all order the same steak, however The womens steaks were one piece of meat, and the mens steaks were the same size only cut horizontaly and then cooked on both sides of each piece, its like if something is cooked well done they slice it side ways to cook it faster. That is the sign of someone in the kitchen who does not know what they are doing. Why are the steaks sliced differently on different plates going to the same table when we all ordered the same steak. I ordered mine medium rare and it came out well over done. I had to send mine back so everyone at the table got to eat their food while i sat that waiting for new steak. then my steak came out about 10 minutes later after everyone else was finished eating, so really took away from the dining experience. With all the steaks being made and as busy as it was there should have been one made on the fly and i shouldnt of had to wait more than 2 mins or so for new steak. and before anyone comments on that, i have worked in kitchens and know how a busy steak restaurant works. Strange enough though when my proper steak came out , which was more on the rare side than medium rare, it was one piece and not two. The steak was mediocre , nothing to write home about. People might think im being critical but when your paying about 35 bucks for a 8 oz steak somewhere that is known for thier steaks, i expect it to be cooked correctly and perfect. To wrap it up the service staff was very nice and i would say attentive as the restaurant was very busy with people waiting. To wrap it up i will say that it was not a horrible meal, however the quality of food for the price paid, i will never go back again. Also they should learn you dont send different cut up steaks to table that all look different and sliced up when the same steak is ordered for all 4 in the party. makes no sense and shows inexperience or someone who is just rushing in the kitchen. would recommend going...
Read moreThis was our first visit, and we enjoyed ourselves. "Tavern" for central Pennsylvania is the best way to describe it for locals. It is a casual bar that apparently does a good food business. Long time employees work there and are pleasant. Promoted as a "Steak House" it has advantages compared to your typical "steak house" corporate restaurant. I ordered two entrees Filet Mignon & Lobster and Sea Scallops, my wife ordered the 24 ounce Super Sirloin. Steak was prepared adequately. Prices for quantity of food seemed generous. As one typically will not have an option for a 24 ounce sirloin in any of the local chain's. They do have a few quirky things like their "salad". It basically is a bed of lettuce and a couple pounds of shredded carrots. I did find a piece of green pepper in mine, but hardly an item to brag about. Every other steak house within 30 miles, would have a better salad. My baked potato was cold and undercooked, I figured I would take it home and cook it some more. Another quirk was ordering Blue Cheese dressing was a $1.50 up charge, which is ok, but then they brought a dish of dressing that was enough I'm thinking for 10 salad's. I ordered shrimp cocktail which were large and tasty, but $12+ for 4 large shrimp seemed high. Waitress was pleasant, but was not a five star server. Never stopped back to see if the 9 steaks delivered to our table and guests were ok. My major "beef" is I like a steak cooked over a flame grill so as to have a charcoal like taste. Not unlike a Texas Roadhouse. Maybe they use a broiler, but I suspect steaks were prepared on a flat skillet. So I enjoyed my steak but I have had better. So don't expect a New York, Philadelphia or Baltimore high end steak experience. But, to be fair, you will get a lot to eat, for a very reasonable price. For central Pennsylvania this place is probably a pretty big deal. I really suspect this is good place for lunch as in a hamburger and a beer. One must adjust their expectations, what with so many 5 star reviews and "best seafood I have eaten" kind of reviews, if you have ever eaten at some great restaurants, if you are expecting that, you probably will be...
