I finally visited Tallulah 1882, where a lovely young lady named Maisey served me the prettiest cup of tea I've ever seen! I've driven by the teahouse countless times (45 mph, of course!) often telling myself, "I really need to stop and check it out." I'm glad I finally did. It's a sight to behold, inside and out. Tallulah 1882 is in Rabun County, but just barely. Literally a stone's throw from the Rabun-Habersham line on 441 and across the road from Tallullah Gorge State Park, the teahouse has customers lined up outside on weekends, but on weekdays it's quiet enough to hold a meeting.
Maisey recommended an Earl Grey concoction with a name too long to remember, almost too pretty to drink, and beautiful enough to memorialize in a photograph!
I chose a chocolate croissant from the display of delectable bites and soon got over being stood up for the meeting I'd scheduled there.
How it works: You order inside at the counter, and pay upfront. There's minimal seating inside, more outside, where you can watch the passing parade, or you can order to-go. I sat down in the quirky dining room and was called to the pickup window when my order was ready. The silverware has heft and everything was served on a pretty vintage tray. At another table, a trio discussed business. The menu is intriguing and a little overwhelming, and I imagine even more so on a crowded day. Put simply, Tallulah 1882 offers monthy specials, sandwiches, soups, delicious desserts and pastries (baked in-house), and an amazing selection of teas and coffee. There's a little section for shopping. I'm so glad I stopped. It was unexpectedly quiet, a special treat, and I'll be back. Odds are you pass by often. Turn in! You...

If you think that fine dining involves a BBQ trough, great coffee comes from Maxwell House, a lovely desert is a deep fried little debbie and your dating opportunities include family reunions, this place ain't fer you - not that you wouldn't be welcome, just that you wouldn't get it, wouldn't fit in, and, well, wouldn't be able to pronounce most of the words on the menu.
I have T1D and, as a result, tend to stay away from highly processed, highly sugared foods. These pastries follow the French tradition of packing flavor into a flaky crust, saturated with creamy butter and about half the sugar of what you find in the States. The caloric release is measured and easily manageable - which is one of the reasons that fat French people are hard to find - a measured caloric release allows you to burn the calories as they become available, instead of having a tsunami of sugar to deal with that goes straight into fat.
OK, so I've insulted the local trump brigade, wandered into metabolic regulation and the importance of complex carbs, briefly extolled the importance of flavor and quality...what did I miss? Ahh. Coffee and Tea - I had a double espresso. I liked it, but I'm not a huge coffee drinker.
Oh, final shot - funky dresses and knee socks - there is a sad lack of funky dresses with knee socks in this town and these folks are addressing the issue with...
