Old white guy here, a demographic not known for being food adventurous. And I'm here to invite anyone hesitant, to definitely give it a try! I know some folks might be hesitant about unknown foods, but you owe yourself a visit to this excellent spot.
Being curious we tried a few things and got to taste a variety of items.
"Doubles" are practically a required item to say youâve had Trini food. Two soft flatbreads with chickpea and sauce between them. Very earthy and mild. Comes with some add-ons like a sweet apple condiment and cucumbers and a tamarind sweet sauce. So you can mix and match to your preference. Hot sauces like mango habanero also available.
We also got Aloo Puri which is a soft flatbreads with a seasoned potato mash in it. A warm and inviting taste but mild. Again those sides and sauces let you tweak it however you like.
For a main, we had the curry chicken and roti. Since todayâs exercise was to try lots of things, we got an extra roti that is made from chickpeas and had split pea and some seasonings in it. It was fantastic! The regular roti is what weâre used to from our favorite Guyanese restaurant. But the chickpea one was really great.
The chicken curry was just like our favorite islands curries. Warm and inviting and not really spicy. You can add any of a variety of available sauces to set the heat level to your liking. The proper method is to use the large flatbread by tearing off a piece and using it to grab or scoop up some curry. Doing this also soaks in a bunch of that delicious curry. Oh my his every bite is a delight.
The gentleman was very kind and explained dishes to us, super helpful and nice. As we explored the food, other patrons chimed in, and it made for a great community feel.
If you are hesitant about curry, this is the perfect place to try it and learn to love it. Itâs not challenging like some of the Indian/Thai curries can be with a lot of heat. Just delicious.
If you have read this far then you are probably already willing to give it a try and you...

My boyfriend and I were spending the weekend in Tampa for a family birthday celebration when we stumbled upon Trini Spice Cuisine and Events while heading to a nearby Walgreens. Being Trinidadian myself and with my boyfriendâs love for Trini food, we couldnât resist giving this place a tryâand weâre so glad we did!
The restaurant had a warm, inviting ambiance with great music and a lovely grass wall, perfect for a fun photo op. The menu had plenty of options, but we decided on some of our favorites: Chicken Dhal Puri Roti with Pepper, Chicken Roti with Buss Up Shot, Goat Roti, Aloo Pie, 4 Doubles, and Pholourie.
For those unfamiliar, Dhal Puri Roti is a flatbread stuffed with split peas, typically served with curry chicken and pepper sauceâit was perfectly seasoned and so flavorful. Buss Up Shot, another type of roti, is a soft, torn-up flatbread that pairs beautifully with curries. Both the chicken and goat roti were tender and packed with flavor. The Aloo Pie, a fried pastry filled with spiced mashed potatoes, was delicious, and the Doublesâa Trinidadian street food staple with curried chickpeas between two fried pieces of breadâwere absolutely on point, with just the right balance of spices.
The only slight miss was the Pholourie, which was a bit tougher than what Iâm used to, but the Mango and Tamarind Chutneys totally made up for it, adding a tangy sweetness that elevated the dish.
Overall, the food was fantastic, and the service was impressively quick given the large amount of food we ordered. If you're craving some authentic Trini flavors in Tampa, Trini Spice Cuisine and Events is definitely worth a visit!
