Read moreDoes this place have good food... possibly? Good luck trying to find out which one it is.
This place has all the old hits for Mexican home food, whether it's from breakfast tacos, to lunch guisos...they also have barbacoa, carnitas, etc. my experience has always been that when you have so much... quality lacks.
First off...when you walk in, it's somewhat confusing. The building feels old...I'm not sure what it was before, maybe an adult day care? They have these old school cafeteria tables that are bolted into the ground. So do you sit down and order with a waitress? There's a counter on the right side...do they seat you? And then there's the huge line where you actually choose your guises or plate you want.
One HUGE pet peeve of mine with establishments is when they don't post a price. On the wall, they have all the plates you can choose from...with no price. Why? Are we doing a guessing game? Can you imagine going to a place like McDonalds...and they have no prices next to their burgers? Why?
So you take a guess on the price on what you want to order....the food "looks" good. But they give it to you on these old school cafeteria plates. Come on guys...do some investments on new cutlery and plates. If you are dining in, after them giving you your plate, you seat yourself and then a waitress comes by and asks you what you want to drink.
It feels like chaos in there. On top of everything...they have a counter to the back where you can order barbacoa, chicharrones, or carnitas by the pound...but it's a mess because those customers blend in with everyone else.
Is the place humming? Definitely.
I had the carne guisada plate... honestly I think eating it out of that 1980s plate took away half the flavor. The carne guisada was decent. I would actually recommend the El Tigre carne guisada plate for only $7.50 over this $12 plate.
Is there something of quality in that place... possibly. But I'm not going to play Where's Waldo in...
Read moreTook Dad to breakfast at RGV Tacos del Guero. Pulling up to the park, I immediately noticed a long line of cars in the drive-thru. Walking in, I see that it's full of patrons and patrol officers. (I saw the parking lot). Anyways, we get in line headed towards a steam table behind glass. Once there, you have a True South Texas breakfast taco selection to choose from. The line moves fast here because you get your food right away, sit down, and then they come by and write the ticket. An attendant took our drink order, and a waitress brought the drinks and left our ticket. I noticed the prices on the ticket to more than reasonable. Dad ordered achorizo and egg taco. I ordered Pappas a la Mexicana, chorizo and egg, and a Gordita filled with cheese in a light tomato sauce. Everything was very tasty, I like that the Pappas Ala Mexicana were somewhat saucy and not dry like I've had at other places. The Gordita was the star of my breakfast, I hit it with their jalapeño salsa to kick it up a bit. It was super crispy, fresh, light, and had that fresh off the grill taste. I absolutely loved it. There was a traditional red taco sauce as well, which I enjoyed on my other tacos. Lastly, Dad ordered these mini, sweet, empanadas filled with Carmel and coated in chopped pecans. I should have gotten a shot of them, sorry. I plan on going back to try some lunch plates. Walking out, people are still walking in, and there are four cars in...
