The Ultimate Comfort Breakfast at Texas Toast Breakfast and Burgers:
Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs Done Right!
There are good breakfasts… and then there are breakfasts that feel like a warm hug from the inside out! I was served the most unforgettable plate of chicken fried steak & eggs today. An added plus, the staff was amazing and friendly; the restaurant was clean, and tables cleaned almost immediately.
Let’s start with the star of the show — the chicken fried steak. Thick-cut and hearty, this steak didn’t just sit on the plate — it owned it. The batter was flawlessly crispy, with just the right golden crunch and savory meat in every bite. Not too thin, not too greasy, but that perfect balance that makes your fork crunch through before sinking into the tender, juicy steak. The seasoning? Subtle, savory, and spot-on!
On the side came eggs cooked just right — I went with over-medium, and they nailed it. Whites set, yolks slightly runny.
And let’s not forget the co-star: creamy country gravy ladled generously across the top, speckled with the right amount of flavor, full of soul, and just subtle enough not to overpower the star.
To add to this perfect medley, a side of fresh fruit — and not the sad kind you push to the side. I’m talking fresh, sweet, ripe cantaloupe, delicious berries, and juicy pineapple. The refreshing sweetness cut right through the richness of the meal, balancing everything beautifully.
This was more than just breakfast — it was a full-on Southern-inspired experience.... comfort food with finesse. The kind of meal you tell your friends about, so here I am!
If you want the chance to dig into a chicken fried steak like this one ... thick, crispy, comforting, perfect meat/batter ratio, served with just the right extras — don’t hesitate, but visit Texas Toast.... You’ll leave full, happy, and already planning...
Read moreThis place is wonderful. The proprietor was there to greet us and to share how he selected the items on the menu, many of which are inspirations from other beloved institutions around the state. Staff was efficient and attentive. Food was delicious and unique. The CFS is on point. Waffles are fluffy and satisfying. Fries are perfect accompaniments to the yummy burgers.
This is the type of place that anchors a community, where families can go on a Sunday to give mom a break, where you can swing by for a burger with a friend during a weektime lunch break, or where you can get your breakfast for dinner anytime.
Feedback I'd offer: coffee was $4, which was a bit steep. If they make the coffee $.99, they'll draw in the weekday morning old men who will come for their regular breakfast and conversation. These guys used to go to Sandee's down the road, and they're probably looking for a new spot. But they're not going to drop a fiver with tip for their coffee. Offer a basic $.99 coffee with refills and a fancier coffee for those who want something better for a higher price.
Other feedback: Consider offering BYOB Mimosa setups, maybe working out reciprocal "$1 off" coupons with the liquor store next door. Offer carafe flights of OJ, cranberry, and maybe mango or pomegranate juices with garnishes of strawberries and raspberries. People can bring in their own bottle of sparkling.
Glad to have this addition in the...

Funny that they're completely missing the point that a basic local chain restaurant like Waterloo is still the better option. Notice how they don't deny the quality of food they're serving. They know they're dialing it in with frozen, pre-made options and charging like it's not.
My husband and I look forward to going out on the weekends to eat breakfast together. With all the 5 star reviews, we thought this would be a great local breakfast spot, but while we ate, we wished we'd just gone to Waterloo instead. The biscuits were canned and chewy, and the gravy was thin and flavorless. The migas plate wasn't bad, but you had to add tortillas, chorizo, and refried beans each at an extra cost. The orange juice wasn't fresh. My husband's breakfast potatoes were frozen. What does save the experience was the staff. They were very attentive. The place itself was cozy like you'd expect from a small restaurant locals would favor. Sadly, though, at least when it comes to their breakfast, it misses the mark by dialing in with uninspiring pre-made ingredients. Taking all these things into consideration, the bill, which came to $50 + tip, seemed outrageous. But this is Austin, where...
