Sorry, but only reason they merited three stars was the wonderful service. Our server remained sweet and efficient even though she was stretched thin with too many tables and a very needy group one table from us. So started off with the smoked whitefish spread and some deviled eggs. Still looking for the smoked fish as it obviously never made it into the spread. All we had was whipped cream cheese that may have been sneezed on by the fish. Flavorless. And was supposed to be served with slices of baguette. Instead we got some sliced hamburger buns that had been buttered and grilled. Just added insult to injury. So I turned to the deviled eggs made with their "special sauce." That sauce would be some commercial mayo (doubt it was Duke's) and some mustard. No salt, no seasoning, no flavor. Not even some relish or something to give them the slightest bit of flavor. Double fail on $20 worth of appetizers. Main courses arrive. I got the fried shrimp with French fries. Shrimp were good, fresh but a little overpowered by the breading. Fries, ehh. Overall a thumbs up. I got a side of the coleslaw (extra charge). One taste did not lead to a second. Again, no flavor, no reason to be there. My companion had the low country boil. You can't really screw up low country boil, but they did. It was SMOTHERED in Old Bay, to the point you had to wipe it off everything to eat but could not escape it. Almost like a paste of Old Bay it was so thick. The sausage seemed good, the corn was terrific and the shrimp, well also seemed good but you simply could not get past the Old Bay. Anyone that does that to fresh shrimp and low country boil should be shown the door.
What was once a great seafood place has gone commercial and lost sight of what made them great. So after our $100 meal,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe had such high hopes for this place. Itās got the right location, the right access to super fresh shrimp. As we drove up, we were sure that it was going to be an amazing seafood shack. We walked in to newspapers on the table, which we know means serious seafood business. The menu was perfect, simple, just some shrimp and crabs. But where was that amazing smell of seafood boil? Well, it was early, maybe they donāt have the pots berlinā yet. We ordered a shrimp boil plate and some deviled crabs. We were ready for amazing... then our waitress brought a salt and pepper shaker. Ruh roh Raggy! Warning Will Robinson! Danger! Our food arrived. Sigh. The pickle was the best thing served and the only thing with sufficient seasoning, our sweat and the sea air were saltier than the water they boiled the seafood in. I swear to gosh I felt like I was eating shrimp in the upper Midwest. Thank goodness for the two ounce portion of bbq sauce and partially hydrogenated vegetable papa johnās-esque butter sauce as well as the standard cocktail sauce. All shrimp drowned in these, saving them from a bland existence. The cheap sausage had the texture of a hot dog, one bite was enough of that. The potatoes were cut up, but failed to absorb any seasoning. The macaroni salad was ok, with a nice oniony-relish dressing. The deviled crab was pretty good, but served on weird fake foil shells. We went here because we were looking for authentic and fresh. It may have been those, but it wasnāt good. We would have been less disappointed at Joeās Crab Shack on river street. The highlight was our server. ...
