No. 1 China — Restaurant in Toms River

First of all you have to really take these comments with a grain of salt because I'm learning that people in Jersey, especially South Jersey don't know a thing about what's good and bad fast food Chinese like this. This restaurant would never survive a hour north. The Chinese down here sucks and it's twice as expensive than places closer to the city and in the city. Now to my review. 1. They ARE rude. They don't speak or greet you when you come in the door to actually patronize them. What real business owner does this? What does it take from the 4 people sitting behind the counter to say ,"Hello! How may I help you?" I walked in the door with a SMILE and it was dead silence. The lady barely got of her mouth "What would you like to order?" 2. Its dirty and dingy. Not acceptable . The front and the kitchen. 3. I saw the cook chopping up veggies . He dropped some on the FLOOR and picked them up to add back to his pile. serious side eye . I was glad my rice was already in the wok. After this line you need to click out of his review and pick another spot to eat at. If you still want to read then here's more. I ordered something simple as I always do as a test when I first visit a Chinese spot. Wings and beef fried rice. The rice was fabulous! Didn't like the beef. It didn't taste like beef and the texture was weird. Like I have no idea what that meat was. I ate the rice and took out the beef. The wings! OOOH Gawd!! How can you mess up fried wings? The wings were spoiled. Yes Spoiled meat. "No, it must of been the seasoning." No, it was both. The batter and the meat. I could smell the order as I drove home and unfortunately it was familiar. I've had spoiled chicken before. 3rd this meal is $6 typically at my north Jersey spots. Well it came to $11 and I have no idea why! $11???? Are you kidding me? No drink no extras ordered. We got: 8 Steamed Dumplings $7.95 Wonton Soup Quart $5.20 Sweet and Sour Chicken Combo Platter with fried rice and an egg roll $11.00 Crispy Noodles “Duck sauce” $0.80 Subtotal $24.95 Sales tax $1.65 Grubhub+ total: $32.72? Think they use their own delivery driver? The wonton soup was very bad. Had an orange/dark brown broth which was very heavy on the salt. The dumpling wraps were good, but the meat was also salty and very dark for pork. They use the same for the steamed dumplings, not anything different. They are huge pieces and 1 or 2 can be per person as an appetizer, yet they give you 8 at a cheap price! The soy sauce is way too garlicky and couldnt get ride of the taste with just a little. The sweet and sour chicken platter came with fried rice and an egg roll. This was a very good price and can feed 2 people. It tasted the same as every other Chinese restaurant's; so average...

Based on the reviews I decided to give this place a try. Boy am I glad I did! I have ordered my favorite chicken with garlic sauce from numerous places around Toms River and even though they all list it with the 🌶 indicating spicy it has never had any kick anywhere else. No. 1 China was perfect! Just enough heat to be noticed without overpowering and it tasted fantastic! The wonton soup was another very pleasant surprise because it not only tasted great it had those thin strips of pork that it seems no one else in the area uses. My only very small complaint was the egg roll was cooked a little too long but I suspect that was a one off based on the perfection of everything else. I can't wait to go back and try another dish.
