I love the filet served here, but since the exit of the original chef, the quality of food is really no better than a buffet. The carrots served are disgusting "baby" carrots that we all should know by now are actually pieces of carrots that cannot be bagged as whole and are mass marketed, often sitting in bins that are rampant with mold. They are washed and repackaged, but you cannot wash away the mold taste the sophisticated palette will always pick up on. Sad they don't purchase organic carrots and simply steam to al dente, which is quite pleasant and filled with flavor. The super sugary flavor is disgusting, maple or not, it cannot hide the mold flavor. If you are going to serve baby carrots, make them real baby carrots. At the prices charged, they should be. You cannot elevate subpar ingredients. It is so sad that their deserts are now pre-packed, thawed confections. The menu has only changed for the worse, getting pared down due to the loss of the chef. No chef works here now and the menu is old and tired. Considering they rarely have more than two tables in the restaurant at a time, the time it took to get our meal was ridiculous. Good thing we had nothing to do after dinner. It is so disappointing to see this once model of fine dining deteriorate and become another meh in this food desert we call Topeka. Watching the slow death of Chez Yasu is both painful and avoidable, but the owner is more concerned about his law career. I ask myself why he even keeps it open if he is going run it into the ground. He could hire another qualified chef, but cheap is...
Read moreFinally decided to try this restaurant. Wish we hadn't. The food was below par for French cuisine. The wait staff was pleasant enough and the atmosphere was quaint if a bit dated. Dishes ordered: appetizers crab cake and scallops. Crab cake was ok but lacked some flavor. Scallops were very small as if they'd been halved before cooking. Decent flavor though. Main course salmon in butter sauce with mashed potatoes and candied carrots & braised beef short ribs same sides. Presentation was alright... both mashed potatoes were horribly prepared. Waitress stated the chef was new and poured the cream way too fast. Very runny and lacked any flavors I could even taste. The candied carrots were not candied just boiled with a pinch of sugar. Main dishes: salmon was cooked properly but lacked any flavor other than butter we could detect. The braised short ribs were in an overly scorched in red wine sauce that was not seasoned well. Two peices of ribs were also a bit tougher than the others. Waitress gave us a complimentary plate of shrimp and mushrooms and dessert as well trying to make up for the meal. Those were actually good. Overall I'd say new chef hasn't quite got the hang of it just yet or had a very bad night. Do not recommend personally. Bill was...
Read moreWe try to support local restaurants and Chez Yasu is a gem. The food is very good. I ordered the beef medallions and the meat was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. The green beans were delicious as well. Chez Yasu serves warm bread with the meal too. The bread was soft and tasted great. I was surprised how few people were there when we arrived because Chez Yasu has some of the better food in Topeka. I would given five stars if the waitress had a better understanding how the food was made. We were there dinner and the lighting in the restaurant was very dim which made it difficult to read the menu. A couple of things that would have made our experience better would have been if the host/waitress would have greeted us when we arrived. It took a couple of minutes for the waitress to acknowleged our arrival and if the waitress had offered to take our coats. The final suggestion, would be that guest are greeted and given water at the time they're seated. We waited several minutes for our waitress to fill our water glasses, take our drink order, and tell us about...
