I had a great experience at Washburn and feel I got a top-notch education there as well as good value for my money spent. I have been around a bit, too, so this isn't just home cooking talking. Originally a city fella from KCMO, I went to KU where I got degrees in Art and English, but settled in at Washburn for my graduate work in education. I have also attended Cal State San Bernardino, Johnson County CC and KCK CC. I hung out in Emporia with my wife while she was as Emporia state, we lived in Baldwin by Baker U., and I have lived in Boulder, Co with many friends attending CU and Naropa.
I have taught Middle/High school students in both Northern and Southern California in a variety of settings- some very challenging (inner city in Nor. and So. Cal.), and I am now teaching in Phoenix. The lion's share of my education preparation came from my graduate work at Washburn. Their education department is very strong. Dr Danny Wade, the head of English Education, along with the rest of an impressive English staff, provided me with wonderful tools to use, and pass on, as I create critical thinkers and life-long learners. My literature classes also did not take a back seat to those at the larger universities. They hire some great folks, and I felt very fortunate to be able to work with those warm and knowledgeable professionals. The school is a bit more laid back than some larger institutions and you get more one-to-one with faculty than you would on a huge campus. Washburn in a nice balance, though it seemed a bit less of a party school, it still has its vibrancy, and the pedagogy you receive is quite strong- Hey, it served me well working with inner city kids in California schools.
So, again, great faculty, nice verdant campus, they even have a climbing wall, a sauna, and, wait for...

Can not be counted on to give reliable critical need-to-know information regarding your financial situation and enrollment.
IF you are making financial decisions / taking time off from work to pay bills or run errands / get school supplies based on the information given to you buy these offices - Forget it.
Do not count on them to give you the correct dates of when you will have access to student aid - do not make plans around their information - Plan as if you are never going to get student aid in the first place.
They consistently give out false information regarding when you will have access to student aid (various forms) with a facade of knowledge about the processes we are "hurry up and waiting on," then falsely make you believe when you will have critical access to financial relief.
I have personally can not afford to pay for the mistake and "lost paperwork" of this department
I ask anyone reading this to tread with great caution - and be weary of how "comfortable" they try to make you feel about how they are handling your education and...
Read moreSteer Clear! School president Jerry Farley has called the idea that boys and girls are different "hate speech." Do you really want to spend tens of thousands of dollars supporting an institution whose leaders cower to pop culture trends to the point of not just ignoring biological science, but labeling anyone proposing a scientific viewpoint "hateful?" Farley claims to promote an inclusive environment while screeching at those presenting basic logic like a Dark Ages religious zealot who is afraid people might start believing the world is not flat. We need to let these worthless...
