Fairground Cafe — Restaurant in Topsham

My family likes going in every so often. But I have had problems the last few times I have gone in. Twice in a row, they were out of what I ordered and one of those times, also out of my second choice. The second to last time I went in for a small event. I got sick of waiting for the waitress and ordered all my food from the bar. The waitress brought it to us but was no where to be found for a refill so again I went to the bar and got it myself. later I had to track her down to pay the check and she wasn't at all friendly. I wasn't the only one tracking her down to pay so I rushed with the pen added in a tip and shared the pen. I honestly didn't think she deserved much of a tip since she only brought me my food. But I always tip. Later after thinking ...I couldn't see how it came to $43. and noticed she already tipped herself and 20%. So this really crappy waitress got an over $12 tip on a $28 meal I all but served myself. My family went in this Saturday because my youngest wanted pancakes. and after almost 15 minute and not getting any ones attention. A waiter came out and in passing asked a guy how he was doing and the guy yelled that he was doing horrible because he has waited over 15 minutes and still isn't getting a menu. We looked around and there were others that also had not had any service. The waiter did not stay to take the guys order. A couple walked in and a waitress took there order and walked away.My family and others got up and left. My first visit to this cafe was for lunch. I had the fried shrimp plate and it was excellent. Great taste and large portions. My second visit was with my family and it was for dinner. Unfortunately I had not seen the "specials board" when I walked it (due to crowd standing in entrance) and no one said anything to us about them once we were seated. I wish they had because the entrees we ordered were not quite up to the quality of what I had eaten at lunch. The shrimp basket was good (although a little smaller than the lunch portion), but the liver and onions and the house steak were what I would rate as Below Average. The liver was quite tasty but it was a bit tough and the onions were almost non-existant. The steak that my wife had was not cooked properly (she ordered it medium-well and it was medium-rare.) We would have sent it back but I don't think it would have been any better if they had cooked it as it was ordered. At medium-rare, it was still tough and dry. I did not complain to either the waitress nor the manager because I like to try a place at least 3 times before I become too critical. Next time (and there WILL be a next time), we will most likely go with something from the specials board and I will bring any issues to the attention of the manager. My first time ever going to this establishment and I was excited to have good diner food. Unfortunately, my Reuben was half decent, I’ve definitely had better. I order onion rings for another $1.50 and they looked great, but the batter was still raw inside and tasted horrible. I only ate 1 and a half of them and when I brought this to the attention of the waitress, she said she would tell the kitchen but then made no effort to get me fully cooked rings or a refund. My Girlfriends omelette had raw veggies inside and really had no flavor at all. The biggest problem however, is the fact that they charged us for the refills on coffee and a soda. Two 6 ounce coffees for one person was over $5 and the small two glasses of Mt.Dew was $7. The waitress took my glass from me that was still half full and filled it without asking me, same with the coffee and THEN charged me for the refill. I hadn’t even finished the first one! Do not go here unless you like to be served sub standard food and want to be over charged without warning for your beverages. Oh, and how could I forget this last thing…. They have a sign out front saying the prices have increased and the menu doesn’t reflect the actual prices. They took my card and charged it without giving me a receipt first.
