Cannot stress enough that you should try this place. Now.
Me and my partner have always wanted to try Korean fried chicken. We even tried making it ourselves using batter mix from the Korean market and a recipe on Youtube - didn't turn out well though. 😅
We came here on a whim, 1 hour to closing time, because we had gotten auto repairs done in the area. The place was almost deserted - save for two people eating in, a waitress and the one poor chef doing all the cooking in the back (maybe just a Monday night thing, I hope?). I would sign up for a job if I wasn't already employed elsewhere.
I ordered the Gangnam Style wings and Rose Ddeok-Bokki, and after a short wait, it came out, piping hot and filling the whole room with a delicious scent.
Let me be clear. This stuff is life-changing. MAD props to the chef.
I would not hesitate to say that these wings, from a Korean-American chain restaurant, completely outclass Buffalo wings IN THEIR HOME STATE. Yeah, you heard me.
Where do I start?
The flavor is amazing. Like nothing else I've tasted in a wing. Delicious, peppery, and garlicy, with a moderate, pleasant heat that doesn't overstay its welcome (there are spicier things on the menu for those who like that sort of thing 😉). The skin, despite being drenched in sauce, stayed impossibly crispy, ensuring a satisfying crunch with every bite. And did I mention they were piping hot, too? My wife's eyes were bulging out as she ate them. They were that good.
The ddeok-bokki was another game-changer. Soft, chewy goodness, slathered in a slightly-sweet, savory sauce I can only describe as being something like a spicy lobster bisque. It even included slices of fish cake and fresh, crunchy veggies. Addicting.
We went so far as to toss some noodles in the sauce that was left over from the entrees, just so we could extend the flavor for a little longer.
It's a shame that this place was nearly deserted when we arrived, because it sorely deserves more business. Yeah, it's a fried chicken place, but at the same time, it manages to be something way more. You can find stuff here you'll never find anywhere else in Buffalo - not to mention chicken that can give any local pizza place a run for their money.
I guess it is true what they say about Korean fried chicken.
Anyway we're going...
Read moreI just tried this place over the weekend, and they make super delicious fried chicken! The place is in a tiny plaza near the university, and it focuses on food, not atmosphere. The place seems to do a lot of door dash orders, and it’s not your typical dine-in restaurant. You order at the front, and they give you a beeper to know when to come up and get your food. All the utensils are plastic, and there is no water available for the diners - you have to spend $2 on bottled water. While I understand this is to make money, and I fully accept having to pay 2 bucks for a soda, to not offer tap water seemed a bit odd, and I did not care for that. If they added a water filling station with some paper cups, that would make a huge difference. The food, however, does sort of make up for that! I think I will get take out instead of dining in next time.
The chicken itself is so moist and delicious, with a nice, crispy outside- this place knows how to make some great chicken! There’s a lot of flavors to choose from, and you can order a variety of kinds of chicken (a classic cut-up chicken with the thigh, breast, leg, etc, or regular wings, or boneless wings). I opted for boneless honey garlic wings, but my dining mates were more adventurous and ordered a lot more. The bibimbap was on point, and the items that were listed as spicy did deliver. Nothing was overpowering or unmanageable, it was all pleasantly spicy flavors.
The only hiccup was my friend ordered her food to go, since she ordered more than just dinner, so she would have some meals for the next day. Her beeper never went off, and I had to go up and check on the food, which was ready but sitting. This is a simple error, and anyone could make it, but she was rushed for our movie we were going to. So just be specific when you place your order! I will definitely be getting take out from here, but I think I will skip the sit-down option since I had to spend 6 bucks on water I did not intend to pay for (and which is the cost of almost a half...
Read moreStopped by for their grand opening today! I've had bb.q chicken many times before, and it's my favorite Korean fried chicken (or any chicken, really) chain. This new location has more flavors than its sister store in Rochester - the addition of the Mala and Maple flavors.
Lots of seating inside, polite staff, and service was relatively quick considering it's their first day and orders are made fresh. Seemed like a good number of people were getting takeout.
Got a small Mala flavored wing takeout order today, and it was delicious!! It's supposedly the spiciest flavor they have (3 peppers on the menu), but I didn't find it anywhere near the spice level of actual Mala. It was a little spicy, and I'm sure people who are not used to eating spicy food will think it's quite spicy. Just not particularly spicy for someone who may be used to Asian spice levels. I've tried all of their flavors (except maple) at other locations and they're all wonderful. Definitely enough of a selection to cater towards different tastebuds. Small size is about 10 wings, and they're very decent sized wings.
Best thing about bb.q chicken is that no matter what sauce you choose, your chicken will still be crispy! Huge difference from ordering at western style wing places. I find most of those end up over frying the chicken so that it's hard (?) and dry in order to not have soggy wings once it's coated with sauce. Korean fried chicken has a fluffy crunch and the inside of the wing is still very juicy.
Highly recommended! Chances are, you'll keep coming back for more. :) I'll be a regular here for sure. Super glad they opened a...
